Each year, the Vernon Hills Police Department hosts the Jim Heier Veterans Fishing Derby at Big Bear and Little Bear Lakes, an event honoring the late Vernon Hills Trustee Jim Heier.
About 30 veterans from the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago are invited to enjoy several relaxing hours of fishing, along with a complimentary barbecue lunch. Whether experienced anglers or first-time fishers, participants are supported by knowledgeable VHPD personnel and volunteers who ensure a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all. Each guest receives a goody bag at the start of the event, and the day concludes with an awards ceremony and raffle.
The Jim Heier Fishing Derby is one of the Vernon Hills Police Department’s ways of showing appreciation for Veterans and their service to the country.
