Rendezvous Arts: Jo Ann Daugherty Jazz Trio at Gorton Center

Rendezvous Arts will welcome pianist Jo Ann Daugherty and her trio to the Gorton Center this December for an evening of jazz described as warm, joyful, sophisticated and glamorous. Daugherty has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, New York's Dizzy's Club and Smoke, the Havana Jazz Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai. She has also appeared at the Kennedy Center, performed for NPR's Tiny Desk Concert with "SIX The Musical" and conducted major touring productions including "Jersey Boys," "Motown: The Musical" and "SIX." For this performance, Daugherty will lead an intimate jazz trio featuring Joshua Ramos on bass and Ryan Bennett on drums. The evening will feature melodies, grooves and seasonal surprises, offering holiday music performed by three experienced musicians. The Saints Foundation donated a Steinway grand piano for the Chicago performance, allowing Daugherty and the trio to perform on the instrument.

The program's featured visual artist is Deborah Maris Lader, a Chicago-based artist and musician whose work is rooted in craft and handmade materials. Lader is the founder and longtime director of the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, which she established in 1989. Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago History Museum and the New York Public Library. While printmaking is central to Lader's practice, her work also spans drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, handmade automata, puppetry, pressed flowers and other materials. Her current work explores memory, fragility, grief and connection through recurring images including hands, migrating birds and tangled roots, with some pieces designed to be set in motion by viewers. Organizers say Lader's work complements the jazz and holiday program, as both invite audiences to slow down and find new meaning in familiar moments and traditions.
