Belvidere mall 60th anniversary celebration (November 22) 

Waukegan's venerable Belvidere Discount Mall, a cornerstone of Lake County's retail landscape since its grand opening in 1965 is proudly marking its 60th anniversary! This significant milestone honors six decades of service, adaptation and unwavering support for the local community and small business owners. The celebration features an official anniversary ribbon-cutting event, an engaging exhibit charting its journey, family activities, live entertainment and a free screening of the classic film "E.T.  - The Extra Terrestrial."

Puerto Rican Society's Coquito Fest (November 29) 

Forget your grandma's eggnog—in Waukegan, the Puerto Rican Society is proving that the holidays are best celebrated with a kick. They're back for their 2nd Annual Coquito Fest, and the competition is heating up faster than a cup of café con leche! This isn't just a party; it's a coquito showdown. Local liquid artisans square off, battling for bragging rights (and cash prizes!) for the best traditional and most unique flavored takes on the creamy, coconut-based holiday staple. But wait, there's more! Beyond the taste-testing tussle, the event is a full-on celebration of culture. Think fierce domino games, lively music to get you moving, and a delicious spread of frituras and pastries because, let's be honest, you can't sip all that coquito on an empty stomach. If you thought holiday cheer was just about stringing lights, think again. The market showcases 20+ artisans selling everything from stocking stuffers to that marquee gift. "Home for the Holidays" at Genesee Theatre (December 5)

The tunes will be abundant with seasonal cheer at the Waukegan staple. Holiday Open House at the Haines House Museum 

"Baby You got them big bulbs, flashin' in your window tonight." - the late Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Waukegan Symphony Orchestra Presents: Joseph A. Favero Memorial "Do-It-Yourself" Messiah at Trapp Auditorium (December 7)

The City of Progress' Symphony Orchestra performs its annual "Do-it-Yourself Messiah and Carol Sing Along" featuring the Christmas portion of George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" as well as a slew of traditional carols. Dancenter North Presents "The Magic of the Nutcracker" at Genesee Theatre (December 18-19)

The Nutcracker is a staple of the holiday season, especially when it’s the night before Christmas Eve. The Genesee Theatre in Waukegan opens its curtain for the annual Dancecenter North ballet originally composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This legendary story follows a group of family and friends gathered together for a Christmas celebration. Clara, the story’s protagonist, is given a Nutcracker gift from her godfather. When the children go to bed, Clara stays awake and finds herself in the middle of a battle between a slew of mice and toy soldiers – and thus, the magic ensues with the soldiers led by the Nutcracker himself.

American Place Casino Holiday Market (December 20)

For one day-lightful occasion, American Place Casino's parking lot will be transformed into a holiday market. Decked out with twinking light, live music, fare and libations, you are in for a festive holiday shopping experiences. 27th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Waukegan Beach

Waukegan Polar Plunge

Tis the season to be freezin.’ Already Lake County has been hit with a lot of snow and low mercury temps. Kick 2026 off by chilling in the 27th annual Polar Bear Plunge in Waukegan. This Waukegan Municipal Beach event awards a polar plunge shirt to the first 500 brave souls who take a dip in the drink. Water shoes or other footwear are required. Food, hot chocolate and polar bear hats will be sold on site. If you’re not enticed by a frigid hug with Lake Michigan, cheer your friends and family from slightly warmer shores.
