Experience a powerful convergence of art, history and cultural identity at the Waukegan History Museum at the Carnegie. Dancing for Our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millennium features 23 stunning, large-scale portraits by Sharon Hoogstraten, an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
This special exhibition tells the vital story of the Potawatomi people and their relatives as they fiercely preserve their ancestry and honor their place in the modern world. Suspended from hand-crafted cedar bands, these vibrant canvas portraits mimic the fluid movement of dance and flowing regalia. Hoogstraten intentionally designed the display so the canvases would "continue to move in the rhythm of the ancestors."
To deepen the experience, the exhibition showcases authentic regalia belonging to Hoogstraten and Gerald Cleveland, Sr., a member of the Bear Clan of the Ho-Chunk Nation. On special loan by permission of his son Gabriel Cleveland, also a champion dancer and talented regalia maker, we are honored to share the regalia of this influential mentor to so many Great Lakes Native dancers.
