Located in the northeastern corner of Illinois, Winthrop Harbor is a welcoming Lake County community approximately 45 miles north of Chicago and 47 miles south of Milwaukee. Known as "Chicagoland's Other Lakefront Destination," the village offers a laid-back atmosphere where outdoor adventure, local businesses and small-town charm come together.
Winthrop Harbor is home to North Point Marina, the largest freshwater marina in the United States. Spanning 140 acres, the marina features more than 1,500 boat slips, public beaches, a fishing pier, a yacht club and approximately 40 fishing charter operations, attracting nearly one million visitors each year.
Just south of the marina, Illinois Beach State Park encompasses more than 4,100 acres of protected natural beauty. The park preserves Illinois' last remaining beach ridge and swale ecosystem and is home to more than 650 native plant species and 300 animal species, including dozens of state- and federally protected wildlife. Miles of trails, sandy beaches and scenic Lake Michigan views make it a favorite destination for hiking, birdwatching, camping and fishing.
The village is also home to a growing collection of locally owned restaurants, breweries, cafés, specialty shops and wellness businesses, offering visitors plenty of opportunities to dine, shop and explore. From waterfront dining and handcrafted beverages to unique boutiques and neighborhood favorites, Winthrop Harbor invites visitors to slow down, discover local businesses and experience one of Lake County's most scenic waterfront communities.
