A Subtle Beauty: The Landscape of Lake County, Illinois

Landscape artists often overlook the Midwest. While perhaps generally not as dramatic as that of other parts of the country, there is a subtle beauty to the Midwest landscape, and it rewards those who spend time observing it. This is especially true of Lake County’s open lands. The photographs that comprise this exhibit are part of my ongoing project to record that beauty. My hope is that having seen these photographs, viewers will take the time to enjoy the grace and quiet beauty of Lake County’s prairies, wetlands, lakes and fields. As a special treat, join us at 2pm for a special presentation: On Contested Ground: A History of Local Lands.

Renowned author and naturalist, Joel Greenberg, will join photographer John Wylie for a thought-provoking journey through the history of Chicago region landscapes. At 2pm, Greenberg will illuminate how these lands changed over the course of 300 years in his talk, 'On Contested Ground.'

When the first Europeans arrived at the southern end of Lake Michigan in the 1670s, they encountered a rich and diverse landscape largely carved by the last great glacial incursion. Grasslands dominated the flat areas that burned regularly, with transitional savannas and shrublands thriving where the flames appeared less frequently. In ravines and along the eastern shores of rivers, where the burning was infrequent, forests reined. Interspersed were varying kinds and sizes of lakes and wetlands, from Lake Michigan to the Kankakee Swamp encompassing up to a million acres.

Much has been lost, some has been saved, and we all have a role to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the natural beauty that remains.
