Spring brings things like warmer weather, melting snow, bulbs that begin to bloom and a slew of Lake County activities to experience. Why would you leave Lake County for Spring Break when you have all that you need right under your nose? March into March with some pep in your step.

1. Untamed: The Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden (Through March 27)

Roses are red; violets are blue. Orchids range from gray, purple, pink and red, and the Chicago Botanic Garden is hosting a show of it, too. The Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Show, a one-of-a-kind display in the Chicago area, features a forest full of wildflowers. More than 10,000 brilliantly beautiful and unusual orchids from around the world will extend throughout the Regenstein Center, including lush presentations within the greenhouses. There are several unique events during the show including a preview, Orchids After Dark, live music and more.

4. Maple Syrup Hikes at Ryerson Woods (Select Days March 5-31)

Who doesn’t like waffles, pancakes or French toast doused in syrup? All throughout March, treat yourself to the sweet sap and sugar maples on a one-hour hike at Ryerson. In this hike, you will learn everything there is to know about how the maple trees supply that sticky substance that you cover your breakfast with. Each walk begins every half-hour between noon and 2 p.m. The family won’t be sappy about attending, but maple they ’ll be enticed; especially just days before and after National Pancake Day (on March 12). Guided syrup hikes occur on Saturdays and Sundays through March 21, from noon-2 p.m. Self-guided saunters run March 21-31, from 6:30 a.m.-sunset. There is also a senior series of Maple Syrup Hikes on March 16.

5. "How a Lipizzan Learns to Dance" at Tempel Farms (March 5)

Experience the Tempel Lipizzans for their Stallion Public Tour this weekend. Leave suburbia for a few hours, escaping to a serene country setting. Gaze at the stallions and their trainers while they go through the process of “dressage” training. This rare opportunity will leave you in awe as each beginner, intermediate and advanced trained horse gallops and dances past you, displaying each move they’ve been training to perform for several years. Not only will you have a meet and greet in their dwellings, VIP visitors can also take a trip to the Old Mill Creek breeding stables to say “hello” to their mares and foals.

The Fox Lake event celebrates the Lake County village’s local businesses, art and the American white pelican, which migrates to the area from mid-March through early April. Pick up your Pelican Passport and visit participating local businesses for a prize. There will be an abundance of deals from nearly 18 establishments.

Did you know that Lake County has over 30 ice skating locations? On a beautiful winter’s day, there’s no better place to be scooting over frozen water. It is time to make your best U.S. Olympic Figure Skater Bradie Tennell triple axel impression. It’s an opportunity to slap shot like Chicago Blackhawk’s star Jonathan Toews. Whatever your favorite activity is on the ice, be sure to invite friends and family to create memories on the twirl, twizzle and triple lutz on the Lake County ice.

10. Miller's Dog N Suds Reopens for the Season (Opening Late March)

Miller’s Dog N Suds is the home of the Coney dog and their famous creamy root beer. The Ingleside drive-thru-styled eatery is a four-generation, family-owned business that recently celebrated its 50th birthday in 2017. A little touch of the past is still relevant today because you can’t pass up a delicious hot dog. Miller’s Dog N Suds regularly hosts concerts and classic car nights as well. At one point, there were 600 locations of the restaurant. Currently, 14 Dog N Suds are still in operation with one other place in Lake County (Grayslake). Other items on the menu at the iconic restaurant include Texasburgers, corndogs, cheese dogs, chicken sandwich and their shake of the month. Miller’s Dog N Suds is open from March through October.
