The season is changing right before our eyes.

Who would've thought we would have missed an entire season of snow in Lake County?

Alas, spring is almost here, and the kiddies are preparing for spring break next week.

Also, don't forget to indulge in the dishes of a lifetime as you have five more days to savor for Lake County Restaurant Week. Don't miss on this once a year event!

Lake County Restaurant Week: 10 Days to Savor

1. Lake County Restaurant Week

There are three more days left to savor Lake County Restaurant Week’s delicious glory. Lake County Restaurant Week is the perfect opportunity to explore new eats and enjoy old favorites. There are 50 restaurants participating and featuring either a prix fixe menu or special Restaurant Week offer. This 10-day event only happens once a year, so make your reservations now. The event runs through March 12. Your taste buds will never forgive you if you fail to indulge.

2. Reptile Rampage

Has the Geico Gecko made you yearn to see a real reptile up close and personal? Lake Forest’s Recreation Center has what you’re looking for and then some as they host Wildlife Discovery Center’s Reptile Rampage. Take the family to see 150 unique reptiles including the center’s rattlesnake collection, lizards, snakes of all shapes and sizes, turtles, tortoises, crocodiles, an assortment of frogs and more. In attendance will be the center’s renowned  American Alligator ‘Bubba.’ Besides Bubba, you will have a chance to receive all of the answers to your questions as some of the Midwest’s reptile aficionados from local zoos, universities, museums, nature centers and private collection experts will be on hand. Besides the plethora of reptiles you must meet, there will be children’s arts and craft activities, face painting, a scout patch challenge and an auction.

Sunday, March 12; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission: $10. City of Lake Forest’s Recreation Center, 400 Hastings Rd., Lake Forest.

3. Maple Syrup Hikes

Who doesn’t like waffles, pancakes or French toast doused in syrup? All throughout March, treat yourself to the sweet sap and sugar maples on a one-hour hike at Ryerson. In this hike, you will learn everything there is to know about how the maple trees supply that sticky substance that you cover your breakfast with. Each hike will begin every half-hour between noon and 2 p.m. The family won’t be sappy about attending, but maple they’ll  be enticed; especially just days after National Pancake Day.

Saturday-Sunday, March 11-12; Noon-2 p.m. Admission: $6. Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, 21950 N. Riverwoods Rd., Riverwoods.

4. Cheap Trick at Genesee Theatre

‘They Want You to Want Them,’ as Cheap Trick makes its way to the historic Genesee Theatre. Cheap Trick, originally from Rockford, wants you to ‘Surrender,’ to the music as they ignite, ‘The Flame,’ through their guitars. The band has toured since 1973, and in April 2016, they were named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Failure to see this legendary show will prompt in a call to the ‘Dream Police.’

Saturday, March 11; 7 p.m. Admission: $47.50-$110. Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

5. Vernon Hills Fourth Annual Craft Beer Fest

This Vernon Hills event is a must-go experience for beer connoisseurs. This is the fourth installment of the Vernon Hills Craft Beer Festival at the Sullivan Community Center. More than 15 area breweries will be pouring samples of their frothy creations. With admission, attendees receive a free tasting glass. Divine eats are available for purchase from Luke’s of Mundelein and live entertainment will be provided by Dave Rudolf. Attendees must be 21 to enter.

Saturday, March 11; 5-9 p.m. Admission: $30, Designated driver tickets sold for an extra $15 each. Sullivan Community Center, 635 N. Aspen Dr., Vernon Hills.
