There is so much to do this weekend September 3-6 as we celebrate an extra day off this fall kickoff weekend.

Sure, fall doesn’t begin until September 23, but Lake County has every reason to celebrate early once the autumn feels appear.

So whether you having the slide of your life, celebrating international heritages, rockin' the paradise or taking an excellent adventure back in time, it's going to be a doozy of time in the land of lakes with these top things to do this weekend September 3-6.

1. Hurricane Harbor Chicago in Gurnee: Final Weekend of the Season

It’s the last splash of summer, and everyone’s invited. Hurricane Harbor Chicago is closing its doors after Labor Day weekend for the season. Take a joy ride on the Gurnee amusement park’s newest ride, Tsunami Surge, the soon-to-be world’s largest water coaster. The H2O haven is equipped with numerous waterslides, the main swimming area called Monsoon Lagoon, a kid zone play area that utterly soaks attendees, an interactive surf area and so much more. Six Flags Great America is also still open before they transition to Fright Fest Presented by SNICKERS. Take a dip in the drink one last time in 2021, and experience all the saturated thrills of Hurricane Harbor Chicago.

2. Festival Fiestas Patrias en Mundelein: A Celebration of Mexican Heritage

¡Feliz dia de la Independencia Mexicana en Mundelein! This four-day festival s celebrates Mexican Independence Day. The event features four live bands, a kid-zone full of activities, delicious Mexican cuisine, a carnival, colorful garb, mariachi bands, a talent show, a parade and so much more. In addition, attendees will receive a visit from dignitaries of the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.

Friday-Monday, September 3-6; Fri.: 3-11 p.m., Sat.-Sun.: 9 a.m.-11 p.m., Mon.: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Tickets $5-$10 per day. Children ages five and under receive free admission. Village of Mundelein, 300 Plaza Circle, Mundelein.

3. Long Grove Irish Days

Ready to celebrate Long Grove’s Irish Days, American-style? Join Long Grove as they celebrate heritage by featuring authentic Irish cuisine, traditional Irish brews, live entertainment that features musicians and dancers, the men’s kilt contest, bagpipers, a best-dressed dog competition, kiddie festivities and more. Of course, everyone’s a little bit Irish in September, too. The Historic Downtown Long Grove event is free of admission.

Saturday-Monday, September 4-6; Sat.: 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Sun.: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Mon.: 11 a.m-4 p.m. Historic Downtown Long Grove, 308 Old McHenry Rd., Long Grove.

4. Bitter Jester Music Festival Grand Finale at Wolters Field in Highland Park

It’s the best of the best performing. In Bitter Jester Music Festival’s (BJMF) 15th installment of the young musician event, the Highland Park concert Grand Finale sets the stage at Wolters Field. BJMF is recognized for showcasing over 100 exceedingly talented emerging musicians from across Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. After five-concert series between July and August, the judges have whittled the field down to eight acts. Some of the featured bands and performers include Adem Dalipi Band, Fluctuation, Petoria, Quick and Painless, Quite Frankly the Band, Scorched Waves, Summer Drive and Verganza. The Grand Prize winner will take home $1000, the runner up notches a bag of $750 and $500 for the third place honorable mention. These musicians are traveling to the land of lakes from five different states to show off their talent.

Sunday, September 5; 3 p.m. Free admission. Wolters Field, 1080 Park Ave. W. Highland Park.

5. Bristol Renaissance Faire Just Over the Lake County Border: Final Weekend

Even if you don’t own a DeLorean, you can take a trip back to the past to experience the 16th-century English Elizabethan era just over the Wisconsin border. The renowned Bristol Renaissance Faire, just over the Lake County border, features sword fighters, maidens, minstrels and jesters. There are many photo opportunities for having the chance to meet and greet with legendary celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth and Robin Hood. The Faire also offers games, rides, arts and crafts, eats, live music and one-of-a-kind encounters with a spectacular cast of characters. This weekend marks its final event of the season as it closes its 2021 triumphant return.

Saturday-Monday, September 4-6; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tickets: $10-$24.50. Bristol Renaissance Faire, 12550 120th Ave., Kenosha.
