Did we hear you say gobble gobble in this edition of things to do this weekend November 27-29? Thanksgiving is one of those splendid holidays because there’s nothing else attached to the celebration except family and food.

1. Holiday in the Park Lights at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee

“We’re dreaming of a…” lit holiday season in the land of lakes. Six Flags Great America returns as it has been closed through much of the public health crisis with their Holiday in the Park Lights event. The Gurnee amusement park “Decks the Halls” in a dazzling display of 2.5 million lights, sights and sounds for the holiday party. Claus, cocoa and holiday cheer will be in abundance at this “Jingle Bell Rock” celebration running on select days from November 27-December 30. The Six Flags light display is also highlighted by live performances, delectable to-go meals, arts and crafts, meet and greets with the man in the big red suit, shopping items perfect for stocking stuffers and more. Guests must make reservations (for each visitor in your family) and purchase tickets online at $19.99 per person. Parking is free during Holiday in the Park Lights. In accordance with Illinois’s health guidelines with the pandemic, Six Flags Great America will operate at reduced capacity levels without rides. The Gurnee amusement park is also implementing extensive safety measures and hygiene protocols, including several new advanced technology systems to protect guests and employees. All visitors over age two must wear a mask and are encouraged to practice social distancing while venturing the park.

2. Lake County Libation Trail Month/Check-in Challenge

Let’s toast to the Lake County Libation Trail! “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” as suds aficionados, vino connoisseurs and spirit enthusiasts will be elated with these glasses of “liquid courage.” The Lake County Libation Trail is highlighted by 23 of the most delectable flavors from locally-sourced ingredients. Whether your adult beverage is an ice-cold frothy lager, a dry red merlot or an old-fashioned on the rocks, Lake County has precisely what you need to make your taste buds dance. Friday through Sunday marks the final weekend of the November Check-in Challenge. When craft drinkers arrive at a participating location, they check in using their mobile pass to show they are in attendance. If libation-ers check into three or more participants of the Lake County Libation Trail by November 30 via outdoor sipping, curbside pickup or carryout. Individuals are entered into a sweepstakes to win prizes (this includes during curbside pickup and carryout). The grand prize is the “Libation Package” which includes an overnight stay for two with late checkout at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, a $50 food and beverage credit at Wright’s Brew & Bistro and a sample pack of Five Eyes Honey Ale, made with honey produced at the Lincolnshire resort and brewed by Tighthead Brewing Co. in Mundelein. 3. Kringle's Christmas Village in Antioch

“Oh, the weather outside may be frightful,” but the holidays in Antioch are so delightful. Besides the Dickens Holiday Village wax figure exhibit spreading holiday cheer on the downtown streets, Kringle’s Christmas Village opens this weekend. The Piggly Wiggly Plaza across town hosts the magnificently illuminated shadowboxes that showcase holiday stories. The scenes at the Kringle’s Christmas Village free of admission exhibit provides that same nostalgia you attained when enjoying downtown Chicago’s Marshall Field’s windows. Kringle’s Christmas Village and Dickens Holiday Village are open daily and run through New Year’s Day.

4. Visit Santa Claus at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills

“Here comes Sant-y Claus, Here comes Sant-y Claus, right down Sant-y Claus Lane.” Jolly old Saint Nick is making his debut at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills this weekend. Snap your photo with a contactless Santa Claus in a safe and socially-distanced environment. The experience includes the new Elf interactive photo experience. Your youngsters can chat with Santa from a safe distance and share their wish list or place a letter in the North Pole dweller’s mailbox for him to read later. Santa and his visitors must wear masks, and each image will be professionally staged at a six-foot distance. The Vernon Hills Mall encourages guests to make a reservation for the photo-op at shophawthornmall.com. Santa is speaking with your little ones up through Christmas Eve before he sets out to deliver toys across the globe.

5. Richardson Christmas Tree Farm Opens

“Spruce” up your homestead “Fir” the holidays with an arbor from Richardson Christmas Tree Farm. The Spring Grove grounds reopens this weekend to create a memory as you and your family can embark (or debark) your tree for the holidays. Richardson also sells handmade decorated wreaths, garland and offers a free shaking and baling of trees. On weekends there are free wagon rides, freshly-made donuts, hot chocolate and other concessions. The Spring Grove tree farm will close a little earlier this season due to a smaller supply. Through December 13, select from white pine, concolor fir, Douglas fir and Norway spruce between seven and eight feet tall.
