Winter is in full swing in this edition of things to do this weekend January 13-15.

There are plenty of outdoor festivals occurring in Lake County. That said, there are plenty of indoor happenings because the weather outside can be frightful to some. Continue here to learn more.

1. Gurnee's Frosty Fest

What better way to spend your Saturday evening than playing in reindeer games while munching on some S’mores at Frosty Fest. There’s also no fest in Gurnee without the likes of Frosty the Snowman. Visit with this jolly happy soul. You can help Frosty make Snowman friends with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. No pre-registration is required in this snowy affair.

Saturday, January 14; 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Bittersweet Golf Course, 875 Almond Rd., Gurnee.



2. Windy City Wedding Show

Wedding ceremonies are a beautiful sight because they celebrate life and possibility. Wedding planning is hectic. In just a couple months you will be dressed to kill walking down the aisle and looking deeply into the eyes of your significant other. Holiday Inn Gurnee Convention Center has got you covered as they host the largest wedding expo in the Chicago suburbs: the Windy City Wedding Show. Equipped with a full day of wedding planning with a one-stop-shop for everything you need, the event features wedding professionals to address your big day’s needs, bridal salons, honeymoon travel specialists, a fashion show and more.

3. Vernon Hill's Winter Fest

The Vernon Hills Winter Fest is a celebration of outdoor goodness and recreation for you and the family on Saturday January 17 from 11 am-2 pm. Don’t forget to bring your sleds and saucers, because this event is held at Century Park North – which is right by the sled hills! Besides speeding down the hills, you can also enjoy dog sled demonstrations, ice sculpting, campfires and ice skating.

Saturday, January 14; 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Century Park North, North of Rt. 60 between Butterfield Road and Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills.



4. Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood at Genesee Theatre

‘Who’s line is it anyway;’ Mochrie’s or Sherwood? Join the improv alums of the popular ABC show as they create hilarious and original scenes in their two-man show at Genesee Theatre. This Colin Mochrie/Brad Sherwood duet is armed with nothing but their sharp wit and ability to take the Waukegan stage by storm. The comedian tandem also includes the peanut gallery in their interactive show.

Saturday, January 14; 8 p.m. Tickets range from $32.50-$49.50. Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

5. Volo Bog WinterFest

In the wintertime, some are prone to be indoors as couch potatoes, while others are more adventurous in the fluffy snow. The Volo Bog Winterfest provides family-fun for all parties as this Sunday event features live music, storytelling, photo contest awards, sing-alongs, arts and crafts, hikes, snow sculpting, cross country skiing and a slew of other fun winter-themed festivities. The natural area will be sure to warm you up with delicious hot cocoa and coffee.

Sunday, January 15; Noon-4 p.m. Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd., Ingleside.
