World War II Aircraft Recovered from Lake Michigan

By: Jonathan Jones 12/07/2012

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor. Thousands of veterans and visitors alike visit the historic site on this day to pay tribute to the lives that were lost.

In coordination with this historic day, the National Naval Aviation Museum with the Naval History and Heritage Command recovered a World War II Eastern Aircraft FM-2 “Wildcar” Fighter that has been sitting at the bottom of Lake Michigan for more than 65 years.

This amazing feat occurred today at around 10:00 a.m. at Waukegan Harbor in Waukegan, Illinois. The aircraft will be presented to the American public at a TBD location. The picture at the top shows the aircraft in its current state, whereas the image to the right shows it in prestige condition. Pretty cool!
