There's a festive winter wonderland in Gurnee. A fun run starts out the new year in Long Grove. A Tony Award-winning musical is in Lincolnshire. Six Flags concludes their season with a celebration of lights. Antioch is home to a large display of boats and other nautical marvels. Lets take a look at the top five things to do this weekend January 7-9.
The Gurnee Park District has orchestrated an unforgettable winter family fun party. Frosty Fest returns from a year hiatus as the free outdoor event is hosted at Bittersweet Golf Club this Saturday, January 8. Visitors can indulge in several winter-inspired activities like iceless curing, mini golf, arts and crafts including snowflake and snowball painting (to name a few), sledding and other reindeer games. The Gurnee event is also highlighted by dashing through the snow in horse-drawn sleigh rides, demonstrations from professional ice sculptors, s’mores roasting by an open bonfire. Your youngsters can have a meet and greet with brisk weather enthusiasts like Frosty the Snowman and/or the Arendelle princess siblings from the Disney flick “Frozen.”

Start off 2022 with a fun run that you can do at your own pace at Historic Downtown Long Grove’s Virtual New Year’s Day 5K. Scamper down the predetermined route stepping off at the state’s eldest restaurant, The Village Tavern and ending at Long Grove’s Visitor Center Parking lot. Competitors can also create their own three-mile-plus run. Registration to the 5K run/walk includes a packet enclosed with a bib, a race T-shirt, a goody bag, an optional route and finisher certificate instructions. The 5K must be completed by January 31, and registration closes the day before. A portion of the proceeds goes to Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter in Grayslake.

Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire’s January production combines the witty humor of two brilliant writers: Cole Porter and William Shakespeare. “Kiss Me, Kate” continues its run this weekend with romance, comedy and a story involving two ex-lovers putting on a musical production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” The musical was one of Cole Porter’s greatest success, winning his first Tony Awards for “Best Musical” and “Best Original Score.” Musical numbers include “Another Op’nin, Another Show,” “So in Love,” “Wunderbar,” “Too Darn Hot,” “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” and other classic showstoppers. The Lincolnshire Marriott Resort production is scheduled to run on select days through January 16 and tickets start at $55.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more dazzling display with over three million lights, holiday magic and seasonal music. This weekend is your final chance to catch The Holiday in the Park Drive Thru Experience at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee before the park closes for the season. From the comforts of your own car, take in the glistening gold lights dancing along to classic holiday songs around the iconic Columbia Carousel and Reflection Pond. A 50-foot holiday tree illuminates the Holiday Square along with thousands of lights on treetops and buildings for as far as the eye can see. World-class dancers and entertainers perform along Merry Market Place Drive. Snowman City is adorned with swirls of blue and white lights with a towering snowman taking up court right in the center. Don’t forget to cruise through Jolly Lane to witness the immersive light show that combines a unique mix of bright lights, holiday elements and festive music. Each guest in the vehicle will need a ticket to enter. Admission is $17.99.

SkipperBud’s Chicagoland Boat Show in Antioch is the perfect opportunity to start thinking about boating season. The free admission, Sequoit Harbor vessel festival features over 70 boats on display including pontoon, fiberglass, big boat model and more. Visit the Antioch showroom throughout the weekend as you don’t want to get left behind on the dock this year.
