Members of the internationally renowned faculty of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute Program for Piano & Strings join program director Miriam Fried for an evening of collaborative works to highlight and honor the violinist’s 30 years of leadership.
Fried has been one of the world’s preeminent musicians since winning the Paganini and Queen Elisabeth Competitions, the first woman in the latter’s history to earn the grand prize. She has earned praise throughout her career with Bach’s Solo Sonatas and Partitas, from New York recitals in 1985 to recordings in France (1999) and Jerusalem (2017). Mark Steinberg is the founding first violinist of the Brentano Quartet, with which he is in residence at Yale and won several honors, including the inaugural Cleveland Quartet Award. He often appears in trio and duo concerts with Mitsuko Uchida, having performed and recorded Mozart’s sonatas together to particular acclaim.
For many years, violist Paul Biss was a member of the Berkshire String Quartet, which was in residence at Indiana University. He was a professor of violin and chamber music for more than 25 years at IU, where he also led over 100 symphonic and operatic performances. Violist Kim Kashkashian has been a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2016, and in 2012 she won a Grammy for her album of Kurtág and Ligeti works. Her long-standing duo partnership with pianist Robert Levin included an album of Brahms sonatas that won the Edison Prize in 1999.
A founding member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, cellist Marcy Rosen spent 10 of the ensemble’s 31 years together alongside Fried. She made her concerto debut at age 18 with the Philadelphia Orchestra and has been artistic director of the Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival since 1986. Alessio Bax won an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2009, following top-prize honors at the 1997 Hamamatsu and 2000 Leeds Piano Competitions. He has toured extensively with violinist Joshua Bell and also regularly performs in a piano duo with Lucille Chung.
