The national holidays come and go every year, but this one is a widely celebrated one in Gurnee. That’s National Coaster Day in Lake County.
That day is today August 16. You know very well, that Six Flags Great America in Gurnee will be front and center in Illinois in celebrating the national holiday.
According to Nationaldaycalender.com, in 1885, ‘a patent was awarded to LaMarcus Adna Thompson regarding roller coasters which were made out of wood; however there was a “Russian Mountains” roller coaster considerably earlier.
The oldest roller coaster is believed to have originated from the so-called “Russian Mountains,” built.

In the 17th century, these were specially constructed hills of ice that were located especially around Saint Petersburg, Russia. The slides were built to a height of 70 to 80 feet consisting of a 50 degree drop and were reinforced by wooden supports.’
Six Flags Great America features popular roller coasters that include Demon, X Flight, Goliath, American Eagle, Whizzer, Dark Knight, Superman: Ultimate Flight, Raging Bull, Viper, Vertical Velocity, Batman: The Ride, Little Dipper and Spacely’s Sprocket Rockets.
Rage of the Gargoyles debuted this last Friday which is a virtual reality ride on the Demon roller coaster. This is the latest innovation and technology. No other ride in the world has this virtual reality experience. It marries virtual reality with reality utilizing the Samsung 7 – the latest phone in their collection that is connected to the goggles.
