Things to do this Weekend February 20-22

The weather isn't getting any warmer anytime soon. There are still ways to enjoy the snow like tubing and cross-country skiing. Getting out there with the brisk air is revitalizing after a long week of being cooped up in the office (let alone pounds you may have picked up on Fat Tuesday). However, Lake County has the indoor and outdoor activities you crave as we move into the countdown to spring. Here’s what Lake County has for you to do this weekend.

1.)    Who doesn't like the explosion of flavor that craft beers obtain? Go and sport your foamy mustache at the Vernon Hills Craft Beer Festival at the Sullivan Community Center. In the second edition of this festival, there will be several Lake County breweries pouring samples of their ales, lagers and stouts. Some of Lake County’s brew masters will be in attendance. You will receive a free tasting glass and listen to live music. Buy your tickets today for a great party in Vernon Hills!

2.)    Searching for family fun festivities? Get from under the blankets, bundle up and head to the Hawthorn Woods’ Winter Carnival at the Community Park. You and the family will experience a wonderful afternoon of entertainment, music, a snowman building contest, games, sledding and old fashioned wagon rides.

3.)    To most people, jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical are musical genres. But to revolutionary music group Black Violin, they’re nothing but ingredients. This dynamic and diverse duo comprised of Wil B and Kev Marcus will take you on a journey at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan. Black Violin has a heavy menu of music fusion that ranges from authentic original music to covers. You’ll be sure to get out of your seat when you see this duet go to work!

4.)    With Ironman and other comic book characters rise in popularity, children have really gravitated towards fictional superheroes. Give your children a taste of what real superheroes look like as they Great lakes Naval Museum hosts ‘Let’s Fly Away’  Children’s Activity. Kids will come and build a aviation themed dodecahedron and learn about African American’s role in Naval Aviation.

5.)    Chicago Botanic Garden reminds you of the beautiful things that come with spring and summer: Ice cream! The Botanic Garden’s Weekend Family Class Featuring Homemade Ice Cream has children (ages four-to-10) and adults get a up close and personal look at the vanilla orchid, the world’s smallest seeds, make your own batch of ice cream and plant the seed. Registration is completed online.
