I grew up rooting for both sides at one point in my childhood. Currently I would confess that I was a Cubs fan. Until the strike occurred in 1994 I was a devote White Sox fan (the year which they would’ve easily made the World Series).
One thing that remains: is my favorite player in baseball was and always will be Lance Johnson a.k.a. one dog. The man was a five-time triples champion, two-time hitting champion and a one-time all-star that was a leadoff batter. Johnson played for the White Sox from 1988-95, and played for the Cubs 1997-99. This also may have been the reason for my change in allegiance.
You may be asking yourself, why is the writer bringing up the White Sox and the Cubs? The time has come to settle things straight at the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum. The Hawley Street Museum opens the Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars exhibit on June 6 through September 27.
This exhibit highlights the longtime rivalry between the fans of these two storied teams. This cultural expose covers all the bases of the crosstown rivalry to examine concepts of loyalty and fandom through videos of each team's colorful supporters; interviews with former players, sports journalists and broadcasters; and fan souvenirs and collectables.
The show includes oral histories that explore what it means to be a fan and how fans feel about the teams and ball parks. The exhibition provides interactives with trivia and a greatest player interactive allowing fans to field their top modern players. A "survey on the go" allows patrons to vote on their favorite players, displaying running totals in real time.
The series is back to normal as a six-game format that both will occur when the exhibit is in town. The first series will be played at Wrigley Field the week before all-star July 10-12 and August 14-16 at Comiskey Park (I refuse to call it U.S. Cellular Field).
The exhibit also covers major historical storylines, including the Cubs vs Sox 1906 World Series, the Cubs as baseball's first dynasty, the Black Sox scandal, Harry Caray and more.
So what’s your favorite song? Go Cubs Go by Steve Goodman or Let’s Go, Go-Go White Sox Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers.
Are you a Northsider or a Southsider?
Today through Sunday is the finale series of the Crosstown rivalry. Just a measly 13 stops on Chicago’s CTA Redline and there is division in the city. Well, the faithful Cubbie Blue will be traveling down from Addison to the Sox 35th stop for another melee in the Windy City at U.S. Cellular.
The historic series is led by the White Sox 58-49. This season series (even though the Cubs are much better this year) is led by the White Sox 2-1.
So before you go traveling to Chicago from Lake County to see Chris Sale, Kris Bryant, Jose Abreu, Anthony Rizzo, John Danks, Kyle Schwarber, Melky Cabrera and Addison Russell, take a trip out to Grayslake.
Cuz it's one, two, three times you make it out to the old Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum for the Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars exhibit!
