Voice: 847.266.5000
For over 20 years the Ravinia Jazz Mentors have ensured that the deep connection that Chicago has with jazz continues for generations to come, and they will assemble at Ravinia for a showcase of their own remarkable talents. This group of eight of the city’s finest jazz performers is led by pianist Willie Pickens, a featured artist at this year’s Chicago Jazz Festival who has played alongside such figures as Sammy Davis Jr., Joe Henderson, and James Moody. Saxophonist Pat Mallinger (co-leader of the Sabertooth quartet at the Green Mill and a quintet with Eric Schneider) and drummer Ernie Adams (a veteran of tours and recordings with Arturo Sandoval, Joe Zawinul, Al DiMeola, and many others) have both been members of the group since its inception. Guitarist Bobby Broom is also a longtime member of the Jazz Mentors in addition to being a frequent collaborator with Sonny Rollins. The ensemble also includes trumpeter Pharez Whitted, whose gigs have included the 1988 Presidential Inauguration and The Arsenio Hall Show; bassist Dennis Carroll, also a longtime member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra; trombonist Audrey Morrison, a former member of Clark Terry’s big band; and Latin percussionist Jean-Christophe Leroy, who has played with Miami Sound Machine and in the pit for On Your Feet!, the Broadway musical based on the lives of Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

People all over the world, join hands!

When it comes to classy, old school soul showmanship, nobody can touch The O’Jays. Taking the stage in matching suits and performing beloved classics from their immense catalog, Eddie Levert, Sr., Walter Williams, Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant transport audiences back to the good old days. The trio spins and glides in synchronized steps, engaging the audience at every turn. They don't just sing, they entertain!

Known for their Philly sound, the legendary group creates a tasty tonic of soul, R&B and disco jams. During the 70s and 80s they produced ten gold albums, nine platinum albums and ten #1 hits.

The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and the R&B Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

Last year they recorded an unforgettable episode on Live from Daryl's House.

Like a fine wine, this seminal soul trio keeps getting better with age. Their harmonies and steps are as smooth as buttah!

Voice: 847.543.2623
Set in the 1940s, Pablo Neruda is a seductive poet and committed communist, but an impassioned senate speech backfires, leaving him on the run from political authorities. While hounding his quarry, a dapper inspector increasingly worries he may be turning into a mere literary device: is a man truly his own author? Director Pablo Larrain ('Tony Montero,' 'No') continues his studies of history, ideology and fiction, resulting in an absorbing, enigmatic chase film. The Village Voice wrote: 'Identities are always slightly unfixed in Neruda … [it] reaches dizzying, exhilarating velocity by flouting the conventions of its hidebound genre.'

Founding Fathers: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation by Andrea Wulf
Wow! What a pleasant surprise! Expecting a polite story about early American countryside and the horticultural peccadillos of a few founders, I was instead blown away by this mas-terfully crafted narrative of potent people, politics and their plants. Wulf's work is rare blend of the introspective, the scholarly and the entertaining, that does justice to both sub-ject and reader, balancing weighty historical narrative with colorful anecdotes and analysis that surprise and inform with the turn of each page. Wulf's talent is the ability to blend the meaningful and the meandering, like the very countryside walks she details between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, with effortless prose that I am sure is anything but, her tal-ents conspicuous, her affinity and passion for subject even more so. Bravo Ms. Wulf, Bravo!

Celebrate The Grand Illusion as founding Styx member Dennis DeYoung presents a special 40th anniversary concert featuring songs from that epic album plus all of the band's greatest hits.

Formed in Chicago in 1972, Styx had a profound impact on '70s and '80s rock, incorporating heavy synthesizer and piano work into their music. At the height of their success, they recorded four consecutive multi-platinum albums: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979) and Paradise Theatre (1981).

In all, they produced 16 top 40 singles, 8 of which hit the top 10. After nearly 40 years, their concept albums, infectious songs and power ballads still stand the test of time.

Turn back the clock for an evening of pure Styx magic!

In February of 1938, Walter Stopa opened the gates of Wilmot Hills Ski Area for what he thought was going to be a small group, the Snow Chase Ski Club. Instead of the private organization he thought would show up, word got around about the ski hills, and on opening day there were 250-350 skiers lined up for the single tow rope he had running!

Now in 2018, we want to celebrate the hard work of the past 80 years that has made Wilmot Mountain the premier ski & snowboard location of the Midwest!

This is an all day event with family friendly activities and fun for everyone. Hang out in the lodge, have a meal at Walt's Tavern, get some time on the slopes, and spend time with the whole family.

The music of the '60s comes alive with two great groups from the era.

Herman's Hermits made their mark during the "British Invasion" of the mid '60s. They produced 14 gold singles, 7 gold albums and have sold over 60 million records. Today, original member and lead singer Peter Noone carries on the tradition of the band, performing over 200 concerts a year for his legion of faithful fans known as 'Noonatics.'

Starting the evening off is Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. The group recorded 6 consecutive gold records and 6 top-ten Billboard hits during their heyday. In 1968, they sold more records than the Beatles! During their time together, they performed on more than 30 network television shows and specials.

A Subtle Beauty: The Landscape of Lake County, Illinois
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Road
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633.2424
Landscape artists often overlook the Midwest. While perhaps generally not as dramatic as that of other parts of the country, there is a subtle beauty to the Midwest landscape, and it rewards those who spend time observing it. This is especially true of Lake County’s open lands. The photographs that comprise this exhibit are part of my ongoing project to record that beauty. My hope is that having seen these photographs, viewers will take the time to enjoy the grace and quiet beauty of Lake County’s prairies, wetlands, lakes and fields. As a special treat, join us at 2pm for a special presentation: On Contested Ground: A History of Local Lands.

Renowned author and naturalist, Joel Greenberg, will join photographer John Wylie for a thought-provoking journey through the history of Chicago region landscapes. At 2pm, Greenberg will illuminate how these lands changed over the course of 300 years in his talk, 'On Contested Ground.'

When the first Europeans arrived at the southern end of Lake Michigan in the 1670s, they encountered a rich and diverse landscape largely carved by the last great glacial incursion. Grasslands dominated the flat areas that burned regularly, with transitional savannas and shrublands thriving where the flames appeared less frequently. In ravines and along the eastern shores of rivers, where the burning was infrequent, forests reined. Interspersed were varying kinds and sizes of lakes and wetlands, from Lake Michigan to the Kankakee Swamp encompassing up to a million acres.

Much has been lost, some has been saved, and we all have a role to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the natural beauty that remains.

Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787
Comedian, actor and impressionist Frank Caliendo has been making people laugh his entire career. The master impressionist imitates celebrities, politicians and sports figures with spot-on accuracy and sidesplitting humor. Whether it's John Madden, Dr. Phil, Jon Gruden or Jay Leno, he captures every nuance of the people he impersonates. Some say he does a better Morgan Freeman than Morgan Freeman himself!

Born in Chicago and raised in Waukesha, WI, he started performing stand-up comedy at local nightclubs before graduating from UWM. His big break came when he joined the cast of MADtv and Fox NFL Sunday as its comedic prognosticator. He later appeared in his own comedy show, Frank TV and is a frequent guest on the late-night talk shows.

When he takes the stage, be prepared: your stomach muscles are going to get quite a workout!

Plot summaries are the enemy of this twisty delight, which offers the addictive pleasures of a best-selling page-turner, the handsome period trappings of an Asian 'Downton Abbey' and an exploration of sexual imagery as intelligent as it is intense. A wealthy, bedridden heiress finds herself seduced by two new arrivals: a handsome count and an attentive female servant. But who is working for whom, and will the heart’s desires defeat the love of money? The AV Club wrote: 'The Handmaiden’ is a fiendishly clever, sinfully funny con-job melodrama … and quite improbably, the year’s most genuinely romantic movie.'

Fifth House Ensemble
Ravinia
200 Ravinia Park Road
Highland Park, IL 60035
Voice: 847.266.5000
Named after the astrological “fifth house” of creativity and joy, the Fifth House Ensemble has brought those qualities to Chicago’s classical venues for over a decade, regularly impressing with “the sheer imaginative chutzpah these young performers bring to their envelope-pushing enterprise” (Chicago Tribune). A resident ensemble of the Music Institute of Chicago and curator of the Fresh Inc chamber music festival, Fifth House is a driving force behind elevating the musicianship of their contemporaries, but they also are devoted helping the next generation reach their artistic potential, regularly going into Chicago Public Schools with Ravinia’s Reach*Teach*Play programs and embarking on a second year of partnership with Loyola University. The 10-piece ensemble of strings and winds will bring the “conviction, authority, and finesse” (New York Times) of its essential repertoire of classical currency back to the Bennett Gordon Hall stage.

On this program, Fifth House Ensemble teams up with Grammy winner and 2017 Caramoor resident artist Jason Vieaux, “perhaps the most soulful classical guitarist of his generation” (NPR), to create a sonic journey ranging from centuries-old music to modern day works. Dan Visconti’s guitar concerto Living Language serves as the centerpiece of the program, which showcases a multitude of styles from Medieval plainchant to blues, rock, and Latin dance music, including works by Robert Beaser, Alonso Mudarra, Duke Ellington, Béla Bartók, and Pat Metheny.

Company: The Musical
P.M.&L. Theatre
877 Main Street
Antioch, IL 60002
Voice: 847.395.3433
Weekends from March 9 through March 25, 2018.

Company is a 1970 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. The original production was nominated for a record-setting fourteen Tony Awards and won six. Originally titled Threes, its plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday. Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As Sondheim puts it, Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we're going to bring it right back in their faces.

As often as alumni of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute like violinists Tim Fain and Angelo Xiang Yu forge successful solo paths—such momentous artists as jazz bassist Linda May Han Oh, pianist Yuja Wang, and soprano Nadine Sierra dazzled from the Pavilion stage just this past summer—others turn the connections they made at the conservatory into professional chamber ensembles, such as the Aizuri Quartet and the Brown-Urioste-Canellakis Trio. Each spring for nearly two decades, a new ensemble of alumni has gone on tour under the directorship of renowned violinist Miriam Fried to share the richness of its synchrony of strings from coast to coast, and in recent years has even given performances and master classes in Cuba. The program by Musicians from RSMI, kicking off the 2018 tour, features one of Beethoven’s monumental “late quartets”—the 13th, representing several hallmarks of his artistic legacy, from its convention-shattering structure to its stark contrasts of tempos, humor-filled and lyrical diversions, and deeply affecting Great Fugue finale. Mendelssohn’s First String Quintet, which fuses the expressive fugal forces of late Beethoven and Bach with the composer’s own characteristic harmony, forms the other half of the program.

Waukegan, IL 60047
Voice: 800.982.2787
As lead guitarist and co-founder of The Kinks, Dave Davies was a driving force behind one of the most influential rock bands ever. Like the Beatles and Rolling Stones, The Kinks helped alter the American music landscape during the British Invasion of the '60s. His groundbreaking, distorted guitar tone and classic guitar riffs gave the band a harder edge that resonated with young fans. That raw sound paved the way for punk, heavy metal and grunge years later and inspired bands from Van Halen to Green Day.

A prolific songwriter, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's music has been featured in films by John Carpenter and on TV shows like The Sopranos.

He returns to the U.S. to indulge audiences in an array of Kinks classics, a few solo favorites and tracks from his new album, Open Road.

Wind Sync
Ravinia
200 Ravinia Park Road
Highland Park, IL 60035
Voice: 847.266.5000
Winners of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the wind quintet WindSync has been hailed by the Houston Chronicle as “revolutionary” for their dramatic, original interpretations of classical masterpieces and contemporary music. They play exclusively from memory, a necessity given the elements of staging and choreography woven into their performances— in Ravel’s Bolero, for instance, the unmistakable staccato beat of the snare is driven by each member in turn as the others lead and engage in the sultry Spanish dance. This creative vision won WindSync the Adventurous Artist Prize from the Concert Artists Guild, in addition to several performance prizes and the top prize of its Victor Elmaleh International Competition, which led the Texas-based group to make its New York debut at Carnegie Hall soon after, and now the quintet will make its Chicago debut at Ravinia.

Voice: 847.543.2623
After pulling off a series of terrorist attacks throughout Paris, a group of teens and twenty-somethings hide out overnight in an upscale department store. Inside they are gradually beset by the forces of consumerism, ghosts and their own consciences. Equal parts 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Zero Dark Thirty' and 'The Breakfast Club,' this sumptuous provocation was controversial in France. As its director was writing the script in 2015, the Charlie Hebdo massacre occurred, and the film was released soon after the Bataclan attack. '‘Nocturama' is at once damnable and debonair. It seduces as it repels,” wrote The New Yorker.

Fourteen-year-old Emperor Marcus the Third is nervous to take the throne. Deciding that he can only gain confidence by dressing in the finest attire, Marcus commands his Royal Clothesmaker to fashion him in the most royal wardrobe. Taking advantage of Marcus' uncertainty and immaturity, a Swindler promises to make magic clothes that are "invisible to fools, liars, and anyone you should ignore," for a large and hefty price. Only Arno, the simple-hearted mop boy, can help Marcus out of this royal mess and teach him an important lesson about outward appearance.

Voice: 847.244.5330
2018 marks the 60th year since our original twenty horses were imported from Piber, Austria in 1958 thereby establishing the herd now known as the Tempel Lipizzans. Today, we are the largest, privately owned herd of Lipizzan horses in the world. Our goal is the same today as it was sixty years ago: to educate about the art of classical riding and promote the Lipizzan breed in the United States.

We will begin the evening with sparkling beverages in our stable courtyard so we may toast the foresight of our founders Tempel and Esther Smith, the commitment of the current ownership family to continue this mission and the horses that have inspired generations here and abroad. Then we will move to the arena for a special Diamond Anniversary Performance of the Tempel Lipizzans. Following the performance we will gather for food, refreshments, music at the stallion stables. Come celebrate this momentous year with us by attending our Gala Celebration on July 21, 2018. See site for more information and tickets.

Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek.... And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
