Winter Wetland Botany

Ingleside, IL 60041
Voice: 815.344.1294
Winter is so much more enjoyable when we spend time outside with the diversity of nature around us and Volo Bog is gorgeous in this time of year. Shades of grays and browns are accented by surprises of green (think moss and ferns) accented occasionally in white with a dusting or blanket of snow. This day-long workshop with Naturalist Stacy Iwanicki starts indoors with a self-paced exploration of herbarium specimens. After lunch we head outside to find the plants along the boardwalk and share what we have learned. Ideal for the seriously curious student of botany or someone just getting into plants, this program is geared to adults and interested youth ages 11 and older. Registration requested by emailing dnr.volobog@illinois.gov or by phone at 815-344-1294. Tell us your name, email, phone number, and ages of any minors. Group size is limited; program may be cancelled if minimum registration is not met 48 hours prior.

The Muppets:
Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the entire cast as they retell Charles Dickens' immortal classic in a way only the Muppets can. Michael Caine gives a brilliant performance as Ebenezer Scrooge, who's visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Caine said that the role was one of his most memorable.

Gurnee, IL 60031
Voice: 847.599.7050
The Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) Holiday Train will be hitting the rails again soon and making a stop in Gurnee!

The train is scheduled to arrive near Viking Park (4374 Old Grand Avenue) at 5:50 pm on Thursday, December 6th. Be sure to arrive early to see the train pull in. The Holiday Train is nearly 1,000 feet long with 14 rail cars, each decorated with hundreds of thousands of technology-leading LED lights and holiday designs. Parking will be available at Viking Park and Viking Park Middle School, as well as on the street around Old Grand Avenue.

About the Holiday Train:
The Holiday Train raises awareness of local hunger issues by encouraging attendees to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to a local food pantry. All donations will benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Holiday Train program has raised more than $9 million and more than 3.9 million pounds of food since the first Holiday Train ran in 1999. Thousands of people gather trackside at depots, railroad crossings and other unusual venues along CPR’s route to enjoy the arrival of the brightly decorated trains lighting up the winter night. The musicians, who ride in vintage private cars at the end of the 14-car train, hop out and climb aboard a boxcar in the middle of the train that opens to reveal a stage where they perform live holiday concerts and invite crowds to sing along.

College of Lake County A Wing Auditorium, Room A011

Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.2623
One of three films made last year by Hong Sang-Soo, “On the Beach at Night Alone” finds the director processing real-life scandal with his naturalistic, low-key whimsy. Kim Min-Hee (“The Handmaiden,” “Right Now, Wrong Then”) stars as an actress hiding from her own reputation after an affair with a married filmmaker. Stifled by solitude in Berlin, she returns to her peers for increasingly heated (and inebriated) confrontations. The New Yorker said: “For all its intimacy, the drama has a vast scope, a fierce intensity … (and) the indelibly expressive spontaneity of Kim’s performance.” The drama won the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival.

Shrek the Musical
Marriott Theatre
Ten Marriott Drive
Lincolnshire, IL 60069
Voice: 847.634.0200
Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek.... And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

Embracing Change: The Growth of Grayslake
Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum
164 Hawley Street
Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.1745
The crown jewel of the new museum, Embracing Change explores the origins and evolution of Grayslake. The first section, The Settling of Grayslake covers the area’s early agrarian heritage and the importance of the railroad in creating the Village of Grayslake. This section includes some of the Grayslake Historical Society’s earliest images, relics from early pioneers and farmers, railroad memorabilia and documents and artifacts important to the incorporation of the village. The second section, Goods and Services, uses images and artifacts to discuss early businesses and long standing industries in the community. From the Wilbur Lumber Company to the Grayslake Gelatin factory, whose iconic smokestack is yet a part of the community’s skyline, this section represents the broad sweep of the community’s business history. The third section, Civic Mindedness, explores a myriad of topics. This section includes school life, early houses of worship, and stories of veterans, fire protection and police work. The last section, Past and Present, uses interactive elements to compare and contrast historic and modern images of the community. This section brings the exhibition to a close, using discovery panels to reveal to patrons how the community has changed, and illustrating that some neighborhoods look remarkably similar to a century ago. The exhibition even evokes vanished scents of the old community, such as fresh mown hay and penny candy through four “smell stations.”

Embracing Change has received state and national awards from a number of museum organizations. The Illinois Association of Museums and the Illinois State Historical Society gave Superior Achievement Awards to the Grayslake Historical Society for the exhibition, the highest ranking that both organizations provide. In addition, the exhibition was one of only 52 museums in the country, and the only museum in the state of Illinois, to receive an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

What is reality? How do our realities differ from one another? Do we care to know the truth if there is a truth? Explore Photographs from the Zion-Benton Community traveling exhibit — inspired by documentary photographer Wing Young Huie, which grapples with social issues, race, class, gender, sexuality within the context of a diverse American society. Reception Friday, November 16, 6-8 p.m.

Join us for a Chalk Talk Workshop with Wing Young Huie Monday, November 19, 3:00 p.m. in the gallery.

Chalk Talk is a dynamic workshop where participants explore identity, diversity and reality through an activity used in Huie’s recent work, The University Avenue Project. Huie elicited responses from hundreds of people in intersectional contexts by asking a series of fascinating open-ended questions. The messages that you see on the chalkboards are the responses from the participants in each photograph.

Art Exhibition: Head in the Trees
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods

Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633
In Head in the Trees, artist Kaye Buchman addresses themes relating to the natural forces and regenerative energies found in our physical environment and the vital stories they tell. Her large scale drawings and mixed-media paintings begin with watercolor under-paintings and spills inspired by algae blooms overlaid with intricate pen & ink drawings. Her inspiration was found in the quiet presence of Ryerson Woods, the lively water currents of Lake Michigan, and the otherworldly qualities of southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest.

While researching native plant and tree colonies, migratory bird routes, and water currents for this series of work, Buchman was drawn to the life-affirming relationships that exist amongst these ecosystems and the messages they convey about our inter-connectedness. She was also been reminded of the importance of natural spaces for igniting imaginative thought and creative action. With a nod to fairytales and myths, and the potency of the whole of nature as an enduring metaphor, her goal is to bring attention to the intrinsic power of our natural environment and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.

A Retrospective on the Caricatures of Native Son Frank Willmarth
Barrington History Museum
212 W. Main Street
Barrington, IL 60010
Voice: 847.381.1730
Frank “Pancho” Willmarth was born right here in Barrington in 1906. After attending the University of Missouri as a journalism major and writing for a humorous newspaper during his time at the university, Frank headed west with hopes of pursuing a career where he could put his artistic talent to use. His travels took him all over the United States where he would sketch the people and the places that surrounded him where ever he was.

The first sketch he sold was after a football game in Salt Lake City, when his date never showed up he decided to sketch various aspects of the game and sold them to a local newspaper for a dollar. He was now a paid artist…. Frank’s true success would be realized in California.

Though still travelling throughout the state to sketch caricatures at fairs, carnivals, vacation spots and college campuses, his first major opportunity came in Los Angeles. Frank was a very kind and likeable man who got along with most people he met his sense of humor was contagious. This incidentally led to a great many connections, and an opportunity was given to Frank to sketch the who’s who in Hollywood for the Brown Derby Restaurant.

The Derby’s walls were lined with sketches of famous celebrities that would frequent the restaurant during the golden age of Hollywood. A great deal of the Brown Derby’s caricatures were done by Frank himself, which allowed him to meet some of the nation’s biggest stars.

His first job for the derby was to sketch Mae West and Rocky Marciano. Later on in his career he would be hired by the San Francisco Press club to sketch the club’s many guests who were not only Hollywood celebrities, but foreign diplomats, U.S. presidents, famous authors, and the occasional astronaut or FBI agent. Frank had the opportunity to get to know some of the world’s greatest individuals.

After an amazingly interesting career, Frank would eventually settle down with his wife Gertrude and their four children in an old mining town in Sierra County called Downieville where Frank was a columnist writing humorous articles for the Mountain Messenger, a local newspaper. Frank lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and comforted by the memories and remarkable stories he had accumulated throughout his 96 years on Earth. Frank died in 2002 but this exhibit aims at resurrecting the man known as “Pancho”.

As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
