Smokey Robinson at the Genesee Theatre
Genesee Theatre
203 N. Genesee Street
Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787
With over 4,000 songs to his credit, Smokey Robinson is a true music legend. He started his journey as frontman for The Miracles, penning such hits as You've Really Got a Hold on Me, Ooo Baby Baby and The Tracks of My Tears. The Miracles went on to dominate R&B music throughout the '60s. Robinson was also chief songwriter for Motown Records, writing hits for other artists, including Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells and The Temptations (The Way You Do the Things You Do, My Girl and Get Ready).

He later turned to an amazing solo career where he continued his tradition of hit making with Being with You, One Heartbeat and Just to See Her, which won a Grammy® in 1988.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer continues to keep the Motown sound alive for a new generation of fans and for baby boomers who grew up listening to his smooth, unmistakable vocals.

Sanfilippo Estate
Barrington, IL 60010

October 27, 2018 - The Sanfilippo Foundation's Silent Film & Vampire's Kiss Gala

This is our 10th anniversary of the Foundation Gala, and we are pulling out all the (organ) stops.

We begin the evening with an hour of touring the Collection in the house and admiring the effort guests put into their fun/scary costumes. Then we'll assemble in the theater and experience one of the greatest B&W Silent films ever made, the 1922 version of Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror, staring Max Shreck. Our master organist, Jelani Eddington has prepared an original, brilliant soundtrack with sound effects to send chills down your spine. This isn't a movie. This is an experience.

After the movie, we'll transport you to the Carousel Pavilion for libations, socializing, and an elegant sit-down dinner, followed by dancing the night away with our period band, Paris Swing, and of course, a carousel ride, too. But that's not all. As we always do, we'll surprise you!

Costumes are optional, but encouraged for fun. Proceeds from this event help the Foundation offer the Estate & Collections to over two dozen charities annually. We look forward to seeing your creativity and joy.

10 Marriott Drive
Lincolnshire, IL 60069
Voice: 847.634.0200
Spend a little time with Sweet Charity. The dance-filled, groovy musical comedy inspired by Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. Sweet Charity captures all the energy humor, and heart-break of life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist. Features the songs "Big Spender," "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," and "I'm a Brass Band."

The Little Foxes
Citadel Theatre
300 S. Waukegan Rd.
Lake Forest, IL 60045
Voice: 847.735.8554
Citadel's 16th Season opens with Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes which was nominated for six Tony Awards, in 2017. Set in Alabama in 1900, Lillian Hellman’s play follows Regina Giddens and her ruthless clan, including her sister-in-law Birdie, as they clash in often brutal ways in an effort to strike the deal of their lives. Far from a sentimental look at a bygone era, the play has a surprisingly timely resonance with important issues facing our country today. Voice: 224.633.2424
Join Gavin Van Horn as he discusses his forthcoming book, The Way of the Coyote, which explores the diversity of species that can flourish in urban landscapes like Chicago. Part urban nature travelogue, part philosophical reflection on the role wildlife can play in waking us to a shared sense of place and fate, The Way of Coyote is a deeply personal journey that questions how we reconcile our needs with the needs of other creatures in our shared urban habitats. Gavin is the Director of Cultures and Conservation at the Center for Humans and Nature. His work focuses particularly on how place-based values are developed and strengthened in dialogue with local landscapes. He explores cultural perceptions of wildlife, place-based ethics, endangered species recovery, ethics, and policy, and the values involved in ecological restoration projects, community gardening, and wildlife management.

This film is a joyous depiction of the artistic process and an intimate diary of its May-December collaborators: Agnes Varda, 89, icon of the French New Wave, and JR, 33, whose photography is both ephemeral and monumental. Together, they confront modernity, and mortality, with inclusive good humor. During a trip across rural France, (the original title is “Visages Villages”), they charm reticent locals into active participation as well. Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary, The New York Times called it “powerful, complex and radical ... just as (its) playful demeanor is the expression of a serious and demanding aesthetic commitment.”

Many farms have cool corn mazes, but not many can live up to the size and detail of the Richardson Adventure Farm Corn Maze! With its 9 - 10 miles of trail winding through 28 acres of live corn, you are in for a challenge and a treat!

The maze is actually created out of 4 smaller mazes. Each one has its own dedicated in and out path. There are multiple checkpoints throughout the maze as well as three bridges that will help you find your bearings while looking at the map.

Finding the checkpoints is the challenge and the way to solve the maze, but if you have had enough and need to get out and get a fresh donut or a cup of hot chocolate for added strength and stamina, you can find your way out in just minutes. There is a perimeter path surrounding the entire maze and there are no dead ends in this maze! And it is completely up to you whether to do one maze or all four!

Are you up for the challenge of this year’s maze? Come on out and get lost!

A brief history: Opening as a small cabaret theatre in 1959, The Second City is now considered one of the most influential and prolific comedy theatres in the the world. With its roots in the improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City developed an entirely unique way of creating and performing comedy. Founded by Spolin’s son, Paul Sills, along with Howard Alk and Bernie Sahlins, The Second City was experimental and unconventional in its approach to both theatre and comedy. At a time when mother-in-law jokes were more the fashion, The Second City railed against the conformist culture with scenes that spoke to a younger generation. The Broadway success of Mike Nichols and Elaine May – members of The Second City’s predecessor, The Compass Players – put attention on the fledgling company. Soon, alumni of The Second City – such as Alan Arkin, Barbara Harris, Robert Klein, David Steinberg and Fred Willard – began to cement the theater’s reputation for developing the finest comedic voices of each and every generation. With the debut of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, populated by Second City Alums John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Gilda Radner, the theatre became internationally known for its ever increasing roster of comedy superstars.

Shrek the Musical
Marriott Theatre
Ten Marriott Drive
Lincolnshire, IL 60069
Voice: 847.634.0200
Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek.... And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

Embracing Change: The Growth of Grayslake
Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum
164 Hawley Street
Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.1745
The crown jewel of the new museum, Embracing Change explores the origins and evolution of Grayslake. The first section, The Settling of Grayslake covers the area’s early agrarian heritage and the importance of the railroad in creating the Village of Grayslake. This section includes some of the Grayslake Historical Society’s earliest images, relics from early pioneers and farmers, railroad memorabilia and documents and artifacts important to the incorporation of the village. The second section, Goods and Services, uses images and artifacts to discuss early businesses and long standing industries in the community. From the Wilbur Lumber Company to the Grayslake Gelatin factory, whose iconic smokestack is yet a part of the community’s skyline, this section represents the broad sweep of the community’s business history. The third section, Civic Mindedness, explores a myriad of topics. This section includes school life, early houses of worship, and stories of veterans, fire protection and police work. The last section, Past and Present, uses interactive elements to compare and contrast historic and modern images of the community. This section brings the exhibition to a close, using discovery panels to reveal to patrons how the community has changed, and illustrating that some neighborhoods look remarkably similar to a century ago. The exhibition even evokes vanished scents of the old community, such as fresh mown hay and penny candy through four “smell stations.”

Embracing Change has received state and national awards from a number of museum organizations. The Illinois Association of Museums and the Illinois State Historical Society gave Superior Achievement Awards to the Grayslake Historical Society for the exhibition, the highest ranking that both organizations provide. In addition, the exhibition was one of only 52 museums in the country, and the only museum in the state of Illinois, to receive an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

Art Exhibition: Head in the Trees
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Rd.
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633
In Head in the Trees, artist Kaye Buchman addresses themes relating to the natural forces and regenerative energies found in our physical environment and the vital stories they tell. Her large scale drawings and mixed-media paintings begin with watercolor under-paintings and spills inspired by algae blooms overlaid with intricate pen & ink drawings. Her inspiration was found in the quiet presence of Ryerson Woods, the lively water currents of Lake Michigan, and the otherworldly qualities of southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest.

While researching native plant and tree colonies, migratory bird routes, and water currents for this series of work, Buchman was drawn to the life-affirming relationships that exist amongst these ecosystems and the messages they convey about our inter-connectedness. She was also been reminded of the importance of natural spaces for igniting imaginative thought and creative action. With a nod to fairytales and myths, and the potency of the whole of nature as an enduring metaphor, her goal is to bring attention to the intrinsic power of our natural environment and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.

?A Retrospective on the Caricatures of Native Son Frank Willmarth
Barrington History Museum
212 W. Main Street
Barrington, IL 60010
Voice: 847.381.1730
Frank “Pancho” Willmarth was born right here in Barrington in 1906. After attending the University of Missouri as a journalism major and writing for a humorous newspaper during his time at the university, Frank headed west with hopes of pursuing a career where he could put his artistic talent to use. His travels took him all over the United States where he would sketch the people and the places that surrounded him where ever he was.

The first sketch he sold was after a football game in Salt Lake City, when his date never showed up he decided to sketch various aspects of the game and sold them to a local newspaper for a dollar. He was now a paid artist…. Frank’s true success would be realized in California.

Though still travelling throughout the state to sketch caricatures at fairs, carnivals, vacation spots and college campuses, his first major opportunity came in Los Angeles. Frank was a very kind and likeable man who got along with most people he met his sense of humor was contagious. This incidentally led to a great many connections, and an opportunity was given to Frank to sketch the who’s who in Hollywood for the Brown Derby Restaurant.

The Derby’s walls were lined with sketches of famous celebrities that would frequent the restaurant during the golden age of Hollywood. A great deal of the Brown Derby’s caricatures were done by Frank himself, which allowed him to meet some of the nation’s biggest stars.

His first job for the derby was to sketch Mae West and Rocky Marciano. Later on in his career he would be hired by the San Francisco Press club to sketch the club’s many guests who were not only Hollywood celebrities, but foreign diplomats, U.S. presidents, famous authors, and the occasional astronaut or FBI agent. Frank had the opportunity to get to know some of the world’s greatest individuals.

After an amazingly interesting career, Frank would eventually settle down with his wife Gertrude and their four children in an old mining town in Sierra County called Downieville where Frank was a columnist writing humorous articles for the Mountain Messenger, a local newspaper. Frank lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and comforted by the memories and remarkable stories he had accumulated throughout his 96 years on Earth. Frank died in 2002 but this exhibit aims at resurrecting the man known as “Pancho”.

As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements.
