Modest Mouse
Genesee Theatre
203 N. Genesee Street
Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787
Over the past two decades, Modest Mouse has become the gold standard of indie rock. They're one of only a few bands to gain mainstream popularity while preserving their alternative edge and cult following.

Their 2004 breakout album, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, went platinum within four months and produced two Grammy® nominations. Their 2007 follow-up, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, immediately topped the Billboard 200. And their latest disc, 2015's Strangers to Ourselves, peaked at #3.

While every song is unique, they all share the same brilliant qualities – thoughtful lyrics, interesting melodies and Isaac Brock's quirky, jittery vocals.

With over 20 million albums sold worldwide and 31 top 10 country hits, including 22 that reached #1, country music superstar Clint Black has nothing left to prove. With an affinity for witty puns and clever turns of phrase in both his lyrics and during his amusing banter with the audience, the cowboy in the black Stetson hat is a natural entertainer. Genesee Theatre

Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.729.7244
***Due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been canceled.***

Comedian/impressionist Roger Kabler channels the spirit of Robin Williams to become the beloved comedy legend on stage. It's not just an impersonation but a stunning transformation – like Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain. After years of study, he has the look, voice and crazy antics down pat. You'll feel like you're watching Robin Williams perform right before your eyes!

The former Zima spokesman and Carol Burnett cast member is known for his other spot-on impressions, including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and TV Detective Columbo.

Taking the stage beforehand is popular comedian Marc Price, who played Skippy on the '80s sitcom Family Ties. The Los Angeles Times calls him "refreshingly bright" while The Boston Globe says he's "wickedly funny."

Opening this incredible evening is award-winning comic Mike Bova, a hilarious funnyman in his own right.

In a decaying Soviet future, an unexplained event has created an off-limits “Zone” guarded by the military. Yet an illicit guide – the Stalker – can navigate its psychological and metaphysical traps. A writer and a professor procure his services, seeking a room at the Zone’s center, where it is said one can be granted their greatest wish. But how well do we know our desires? An enigmatic, allegorical masterpiece by Andrei Tarkovksy, the film evokes, and itself influenced, the work of Stanley Kubrick. This “haunting tale … offers visual splendor, as well as mysteries, portents and miracles,” said the Wall Street Journal.

Voice: 847.735.8554
Citadel Theatre Company, an Equity-affiliated professional company performing in Lake Forest, will stage the first production of its new Theatre for Young Audiences with the musical ELEPHANT AND PIGGIE’S “WE ARE IN A PLAY!”, based on the best-selling, award-winning children’s’ books written by Mo Willems. The musical, which was commissioned by the Kennedy Center, where it premiered in 2013, has its book and lyrics by Willems and music by Deborah Wicks LaPuma. The musical, recommended for audiences age 3 and up, will be directed by Joe Lehman and performed by a cast of adult professional actors.

In the musical, an elephant named Gerald and a pig named Piggie are best, best, bestus (a word Gerald and Piggie made up that means "very best") friends, but Gerald worries that something could go wrong that would end their friendship. Piggie is not worried at all. She's even happier and more excited than usual. That's because she and Gerald are invited to a party hosted by the Squirrelles, three singing squirrels who love to have a good time. And so begins a day when anything is possible.

The cast will include Ryan Dooley (Gerald, the Elephant), Britanni Moore (Piggie), and Lucy Shea, Catherine Athenson and Tuesdai B. Perry as the Squirelles. The production team will include Brenda Good (Choreographer), David Zizic (Musical Director), Ben Doylida (Scenic and Lighting Designer, Technical Director, Master Carpenter), Virginia Varland (Costume Designer), Mark Holley (Properties Manager), Robin M. Hughes, Metropolis Casting (Casting Director).

Jazz pianist Ben Rosenblum and his trio will bring selections from their newest album, River City, as well as songs they’ve developed while on tour and cuts from their first record, Instead. Rosenblum’s original compositions and arrangements feature dramatic, narrative elements, in which improvisation is not only a personal expression but a transition from one mood to the next. The trio’s repertoire reaches beyond the jazz canon to also incorporate traditional South American, Irish, and Eastern European styles, modern musical theater, and classical music and movie soundtracks, expanding the range of what feels native to jazz, in particular the good-feeling, grooving, “dance music” side of its history.

Citadel's 16th Season opens with Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes which was nominated for six Tony Awards, in 2017. Set in Alabama in 1900, Lillian Hellman’s play follows Regina Giddens and her ruthless clan, including her sister-in-law Birdie, as they clash in often brutal ways in an effort to strike the deal of their lives. Far from a sentimental look at a bygone era, the play has a surprisingly timely resonance with important issues facing our country today. Many farms have cool corn mazes, but not many can live up to the size and detail of the Richardson Adventure Farm Corn Maze! With its 9 - 10 miles of trail winding through 28 acres of live corn, you are in for a challenge and a treat!

The maze is actually created out of 4 smaller mazes. Each one has its own dedicated in and out path. There are multiple checkpoints throughout the maze as well as three bridges that will help you find your bearings while looking at the map.

Finding the checkpoints is the challenge and the way to solve the maze, but if you have had enough and need to get out and get a fresh donut or a cup of hot chocolate for added strength and stamina, you can find your way out in just minutes. There is a perimeter path surrounding the entire maze and there are no dead ends in this maze! And it is completely up to you whether to do one maze or all four!

Are you up for the challenge of this year’s maze? Come on out and get lost!

Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek.... And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

Embracing Change: The Growth of Grayslake
Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum
164 Hawley Street
Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.1745
The crown jewel of the new museum, Embracing Change explores the origins and evolution of Grayslake. The first section, The Settling of Grayslake covers the area’s early agrarian heritage and the importance of the railroad in creating the Village of Grayslake. This section includes some of the Grayslake Historical Society’s earliest images, relics from early pioneers and farmers, railroad memorabilia and documents and artifacts important to the incorporation of the village. The second section, Goods and Services, uses images and artifacts to discuss early businesses and long standing industries in the community. From the Wilbur Lumber Company to the Grayslake Gelatin factory, whose iconic smokestack is yet a part of the community’s skyline, this section represents the broad sweep of the community’s business history. The third section, Civic Mindedness, explores a myriad of topics. This section includes school life, early houses of worship, and stories of veterans, fire protection and police work. The last section, Past and Present, uses interactive elements to compare and contrast historic and modern images of the community. This section brings the exhibition to a close, using discovery panels to reveal to patrons how the community has changed, and illustrating that some neighborhoods look remarkably similar to a century ago. The exhibition even evokes vanished scents of the old community, such as fresh mown hay and penny candy through four “smell stations.”

Embracing Change has received state and national awards from a number of museum organizations. The Illinois Association of Museums and the Illinois State Historical Society gave Superior Achievement Awards to the Grayslake Historical Society for the exhibition, the highest ranking that both organizations provide. In addition, the exhibition was one of only 52 museums in the country, and the only museum in the state of Illinois, to receive an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

Sibylle Szaggars Redford is a German born Multimedia Environmental Artist. She has dedicated her life’s work to creating art informed by her spiritual consciousness of our connection to life, the land, and the world by raising awareness of our environmental unsound practices. Redford’s inspirations stem from nature, ancient cultures such as the Hopi, the Moroccan, or as in her most recent work the monsoon rains in the New Mexican High Desert.

She has exhibited her work throughout England, Germany, Italy, Monaco, France, Peru, Japan, Singapore, and the United States, and often collaborates with various musicians and choreographers. Her large oil painting series “Shape of Color” was her first collaboration with the world-renowned cellist Nina Kotova which was presented during the International Classical Music Festival in Cortona, Italy and later in Singapore of 2008.

In the summer of 2010, Szaggars-Redford began creating her “Rainfall” series, inviting rain showers to become a major instigator and her collaborator with Nature. In this series Redford provides the paper with her abstract watercolor pigment compositions – she then waits for the monsoon rain in the New Mexican High Desert and places her work in these showers.

Szaggars-Redford's pieces will be on display at Brushwood Center from May 21st to July 15th.

Art Exhibition: Head in the Trees
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Rd.
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633
In Head in the Trees, artist Kaye Buchman addresses themes relating to the natural forces and regenerative energies found in our physical environment and the vital stories they tell. Her large scale drawings and mixed-media paintings begin with watercolor under-paintings and spills inspired by algae blooms overlaid with intricate pen & ink drawings. Her inspiration was found in the quiet presence of Ryerson Woods, the lively water currents of Lake Michigan, and the otherworldly qualities of southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest.

While researching native plant and tree colonies, migratory bird routes, and water currents for this series of work, Buchman was drawn to the life-affirming relationships that exist amongst these ecosystems and the messages they convey about our inter-connectedness. She was also been reminded of the importance of natural spaces for igniting imaginative thought and creative action. With a nod to fairytales and myths, and the potency of the whole of nature as an enduring metaphor, her goal is to bring attention to the intrinsic power of our natural environment and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.

?A Retrospective on the Caricatures of Native Son Frank Willmarth
Barrington History Museum
212 W. Main Street
Barrington, IL 60010
Voice: 847.381.1730
Frank “Pancho” Willmarth was born right here in Barrington in 1906. After attending the University of Missouri as a journalism major and writing for a humorous newspaper during his time at the university, Frank headed west with hopes of pursuing a career where he could put his artistic talent to use. His travels took him all over the United States where he would sketch the people and the places that surrounded him where ever he was.

The first sketch he sold was after a football game in Salt Lake City, when his date never showed up he decided to sketch various aspects of the game and sold them to a local newspaper for a dollar. He was now a paid artist…. Frank’s true success would be realized in California.

Though still travelling throughout the state to sketch caricatures at fairs, carnivals, vacation spots and college campuses, his first major opportunity came in Los Angeles. Frank was a very kind and likeable man who got along with most people he met his sense of humor was contagious. This incidentally led to a great many connections, and an opportunity was given to Frank to sketch the who’s who in Hollywood for the Brown Derby Restaurant.

The Derby’s walls were lined with sketches of famous celebrities that would frequent the restaurant during the golden age of Hollywood. A great deal of the Brown Derby’s caricatures were done by Frank himself, which allowed him to meet some of the nation’s biggest stars.

His first job for the derby was to sketch Mae West and Rocky Marciano. Later on in his career he would be hired by the San Francisco Press club to sketch the club’s many guests who were not only Hollywood celebrities, but foreign diplomats, U.S. presidents, famous authors, and the occasional astronaut or FBI agent. Frank had the opportunity to get to know some of the world’s greatest individuals.

After an amazingly interesting career, Frank would eventually settle down with his wife Gertrude and their four children in an old mining town in Sierra County called Downieville where Frank was a columnist writing humorous articles for the Mountain Messenger, a local newspaper. Frank lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and comforted by the memories and remarkable stories he had accumulated throughout his 96 years on Earth. Frank died in 2002 but this exhibit aims at resurrecting the man known as “Pancho”.

As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Tours are about one hour.

Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
