08/21/18 - 08/21/18 Chalk the Walks Century Park Pavilion 1400 Indianwood Drive Vernon Hills, IL
Chalk the Walks is all about spreading joy, optimism and inspiration through the magical power of sidewalk chalk. Remember when you were a kid and you’d draw pictures and write happy thoughts with chalk in your driveway and down the sidewalks of your street? And the adults always smiled when they read the big, pastel-colored messages? This is just like that. The idea is as simple as it was in childhood: write happy messages, have fun doing it, and spread some joy while you’re at it.
All ages are invited to join the Park District on August 21 at the Century Park Pavilion, 1400 Indianwood Drive, Vernon Hills. We will chalk the walks from 5:30-6:30 pm, then go on a 30-minute walk in Century Park. Wear your GO VERNON HILLS t-shirts! Extra t-shirts will be available at the Chalk the Walk, free of charge. Chalk is provided.

All eyes will be smiling – Irish or otherwise – when the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association presents Irish Days, September 1 – 3, a family-friendly celebration of Irish culture, music, food and drink. The timeless town’s cobble-stone walkways get painted a shade of green with bagpipers, folk bands, dancers and Irish merchandise during this free outdoor festival.

Some of Chicago’s top Irish musicians, singers and dancers are taking the stage in Fountain Square, including Rory Makem, The Shannon Rovers Bagpipe Band, The McNulty Irish Dancers, Gavin Coyle, The Chancey Brothers, Joe Cullen & Kathleen Keane, and many more (the full 3-day lineup can be found at http://longgrove.org/festivals/irish-days/). Another favorite sight at Irish Days is the Irish Dog Competition. All dogs are Irish on Irish Days, but those who dress the part are given extra credit. Each day, a panel of children judges will crown an Irish Doggie King, Queen, Prince and Princess. The contest is open to any dog whose owner enters them the day-of at the competition area located by the Long Grove Information Center (308 Old McHenry Rd).
Harrington’s Catering and Deli will return to fuel visitors with hand-carved corned beef sandwiches, fish and chips, and other traditional Irish foods. Finally, Irish Days will again feature a Gaelic Tent in Fountain Square that promotes awareness of the Irish language and genealogy. 09/01/18 - 11/04/18 Richardson's Largest Corn Maze is Open Richardson Adventure Farm & Corn Maze 909 English Prairie Road Spring Grove, IL 60081
Voice: 815.675.9729 Many farms have cool corn mazes, but not many can live up to the size and detail of the Richardson Adventure Farm Corn Maze! With its 9 - 10 miles of trail winding through 28 acres of live corn, you are in for a challenge and a treat!
The maze is actually created out of 4 smaller mazes. Each one has its own dedicated in and out path. There are multiple checkpoints throughout the maze as well as three bridges that will help you find your bearings while looking at the map.
Finding the checkpoints is the challenge and the way to solve the maze, but if you have had enough and need to get out and get a fresh donut or a cup of hot chocolate for added strength and stamina, you can find your way out in just minutes. There is a perimeter path surrounding the entire maze and there are no dead ends in this maze! And it is completely up to you whether to do one maze or all four!
Are you up for the challenge of this year’s maze? Come on out and get lost!

ONGOING Art Exhibition: Rain Paintings Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods 21850 N. Riverwoods Rd. Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633.2424 Sibylle Szaggars Redford is a German born Multimedia Environmental Artist. She has dedicated her life’s work to creating art informed by her spiritual consciousness of our connection to life, the land, and the world by raising awareness of our environmental unsound practices. Redford’s inspirations stem from nature, ancient cultures such as the Hopi, the Moroccan, or as in her most recent work the monsoon rains in the New Mexican High Desert.
She has exhibited her work throughout England, Germany, Italy, Monaco, France, Peru, Japan, Singapore, and the United States, and often collaborates with various musicians and choreographers. Her large oil painting series “Shape of Color” was her first collaboration with the world-renowned cellist Nina Kotova which was presented during the International Classical Music Festival in Cortona, Italy and later in Singapore of 2008.
In the summer of 2010, Szaggars-Redford began creating her “Rainfall” series, inviting rain showers to become a major instigator and her collaborator with Nature. In this series Redford provides the paper with her abstract watercolor pigment compositions – she then waits for the monsoon rain in the New Mexican High Desert and places her work in these showers.
Szaggars-Redford's pieces will be on display at Brushwood Center from May 21st to July 15th.

ONGOING Guided Tours at Volo Bog Volo Bog State Natural Area 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd. Ingleside, IL 60050
Voice: 815-344-1294 As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Tours are about one hour.

Voice: 847 546-8558 Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
