Preacher Lawson
Genesee Theatre
203 N. Genesee Street
Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787
***Sold Out***
One of the most likeable, animated characters you'll ever see perform, Preacher Lawson has that special charisma all gifted comedians possess. Best known from season 12 of America’s Got Talent, the comic and fan favorite used his animated stand-up to reach the finals during the show’s highest-rated season. He was the only comedian to make it that far.

Lawson was invited back to compete in AGT's spin-off series, The Champions, which began in January. The hilarious funnyman brought down the house during the show's premiere and quickly moved on to the finals.

When a comedian cites Eddie Murphy, Will Smith and Spongebob Squarepants as comedic inspirations, you know you're in for a wild evening. Get ready to laugh, because this guy's the real deal!

Rogue V. Citizen Heroes: Superheroes and Zeitgeist
Bess Bower Dunn Museum
1899 W. Winchester Rd.
Libertyville, IL 60048
College of Lake County sociology professors John and Maria Jose Tenuto contrast the definitions of “citizen” and “rogue” heroes. Using examples from comic books and superhero films, they will show how the most popular characters at a given time are a reflection of what the society is experiencing.

During differing decades, such as the 1990s, the culture of the United States has lauded rogue heroes like Batman and Spiderman. At other times, such as the 2000s, citizen heroes have been favored, with Superman and Captain America being prominent. In this fun and engaging multimedia presentation, College of Lake County sociology professors John and Maria Jose Tenuto contrast the definitions of "citizen" and "rogue" heroes, relating the concepts to the ideas of mythologists like Joseph Campbell and Vladimir Propp. Then, using examples from comic books and superhero films, the connection between the real world of wars, economic crisis, terrorism, and political trends are compared to the reel world of superhero characters - showing how the characters that are most popular at given times are usually a reflection of what the society is experiencing. As superhero characters undergo revisions and recreations to connect with various generations, the changes reflect what is going on in the real world - by learning about these fictional characters, we can learn something about our real communities.

Voice: 847.543.2623
A teenage girl disappears; a father vows to find her when the law cannot; his quest leads him deeply into a foreign culture; his wife and son become casualties of his obsession. Thomas Bidegain, writer of previous films “A Prophet, Rust and Bone,” and “Dheepan,” takes elements from classic Westerns (“The Searchers” in particular) and updates them for the 9/11 era. Now, France is the frontier, torn between American imperialism and Islamic migration through Europe. Variety said, “Powerfully original and unexpectedly classical at the same time. [The film is] tough to watch, yet continues to haunt in the weeks that follow.”

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Rd.
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633.2424
A Word from the Artist:
I am astonished by the improbable beauty and enduring mystery of birds.

Birds are miraculous. A European Swift can eat, sleep, and molt on the wing while staying aloft for nearly a year. Bar-tailed Godwits can fly nonstop from Alaska to New Zealand, more than seven thousand miles, in nine days. A Wandering Albatross can glide on its ten-foot wing span, without a wing beat, for five hundred miles. Thick-billed Murres can dive underwater to a depth of seven hundred feet. And, to open nuts they want to eat, Crows use cars as their personal nutcrackers, dropping nuts on the road for cars to crush. To further illustrate their cleverness, and maybe their playfulness, one Crow has been seen sledding down a snowy roof on a plastic lid, then carrying the lid in its beak to the top of the roof to sled down again.

In Head in the Trees, artist Kaye Buchman addresses themes relating to the natural forces and regenerative energies found in our physical environment and the vital stories they tell. Her large scale drawings and mixed-media paintings begin with watercolor under-paintings and spills inspired by algae blooms overlaid with intricate pen & ink drawings. Her inspiration was found in the quiet presence of Ryerson Woods, the lively water currents of Lake Michigan, and the otherworldly qualities of southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest.

While researching native plant and tree colonies, migratory bird routes, and water currents for this series of work, Buchman was drawn to the life-affirming relationships that exist amongst these ecosystems and the messages they convey about our inter-connectedness. She was also been reminded of the importance of natural spaces for igniting imaginative thought and creative action. With a nod to fairytales and myths, and the potency of the whole of nature as an enduring metaphor, her goal is to bring attention to the intrinsic power of our natural environment and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.

A Retrospective on the Caricatures of Native Son Frank Willmarth
Barrington History Museum
212 W. Main Street
Barrington, IL 60010
Voice: 847.381.1730
Frank “Pancho” Willmarth was born right here in Barrington in 1906. After attending the University of Missouri as a journalism major and writing for a humorous newspaper during his time at the university, Frank headed west with hopes of pursuing a career where he could put his artistic talent to use. His travels took him all over the United States where he would sketch the people and the places that surrounded him where ever he was.

The first sketch he sold was after a football game in Salt Lake City, when his date never showed up he decided to sketch various aspects of the game and sold them to a local newspaper for a dollar. He was now a paid artist…. Frank’s true success would be realized in California.

Though still travelling throughout the state to sketch caricatures at fairs, carnivals, vacation spots and college campuses, his first major opportunity came in Los Angeles. Frank was a very kind and likeable man who got along with most people he met his sense of humor was contagious. This incidentally led to a great many connections, and an opportunity was given to Frank to sketch the who’s who in Hollywood for the Brown Derby Restaurant.

The Derby’s walls were lined with sketches of famous celebrities that would frequent the restaurant during the golden age of Hollywood. A great deal of the Brown Derby’s caricatures were done by Frank himself, which allowed him to meet some of the nation’s biggest stars.

His first job for the derby was to sketch Mae West and Rocky Marciano. Later on in his career he would be hired by the San Francisco Press club to sketch the club’s many guests who were not only Hollywood celebrities, but foreign diplomats, U.S. presidents, famous authors, and the occasional astronaut or FBI agent. Frank had the opportunity to get to know some of the world’s greatest individuals.

After an amazingly interesting career, Frank would eventually settle down with his wife Gertrude and their four children in an old mining town in Sierra County called Downieville where Frank was a columnist writing humorous articles for the Mountain Messenger, a local newspaper. Frank lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and comforted by the memories and remarkable stories he had accumulated throughout his 96 years on Earth. Frank died in 2002 but this exhibit aims at resurrecting the man known as “Pancho”.

Volo Bog State Natural Area

As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Tours are about one hour.

Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
