Abraham Lincoln Pop-Up Exhibit
Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Bowen Park 39 Jack Benny Dr. Waukegan, IL 60087
Voice: 847.360.4740 The Waukegan History Museum, of the Waukegan Historical Society and the Waukegan Park District, has a new pop-up exhibit titled Abraham Lincoln: A Man Of His Time, A Man For All Times on view in the theatre at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Bowen Park. The exhibit was recently gifted to the Waukegan Historical Society from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The exhibition runs through February 28, 2019 and is appropriate for All Ages and is Free to view.
The exhibition traces Lincoln’s path from self-education, rough-hewn lawyer with virtually no administrative experience, to the president who guided a divided nation through the crisis of slavery, secession and Civil War. We hope that presenting Lincoln’s own words in speeches, letters, and proclamations will encourage a deeper understanding of our 16th president’s life, accomplishments and legacy.
Additional Waukegan History Museum exhibits have been added to the display. The exhibit The Civil War: The War Efforts in Waukegan tells a comprehensive story of how the Civil War affected local citizens. The years leading up to the war are featured with stories including local Underground Railroad connections as well as Lincoln’s memorable visit to Waukegan. Stories of Waukegan soldiers are told including the famous drummer boy, Orion Howe, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery on the battlefield at Vicksburg while at the age of 14. Also on display is a feature on the Lincoln assassination, which includes a newspaper from the day of the assassination and a model of the Lincoln Family home in Springfield, Illinois, which is decorated as it was during the Lincoln funeral.
Special Lincoln themed programs and lectures will be featured in the Jack Benny Center Theatre during the duration of the exhibit. All programs are Free and appropriate for All Ages.
Current Schedule of Programs:
- December 6, 2018 at 7pm- Showing of 2012 award winning movie that features the story of Abraham Lincoln and the passing of the 13th Amendment.
- December 11, 2018 at 7pm-Presentation titled, “Lincoln Speaks on Race and Slavery” by Josh Bill, Waukegan Historical Society President
- January 6, 2019 at 4pm-“Lincoln’s Watch” presentation by Doug Stiles. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln brought his watch to a Washington D.C. jeweler for repairs. Did the jeweler add an inscription inside the watch? A local family “legend” said he did. Hear the story from Doug Stiles, a descendent of the jeweler, and his adventure of discovering the truth!
- January 11, 2019 at 12pm- Lunch & Learn “Waukegan’s Civil War Efforts”

CLC’s International Film Series Featuring Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
College of Lake County Room C105 on the Grayslake Campus. 19351 W. Washington St. Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.2623 After committing murder, Rome’s chief of police perversely leaves clues to frame himself, to prove a point he himself doesn’t fully understand. An absurdist thriller made decades ago, the film nevertheless reflects current events: a politician who thinks he’s above the law . . . an inconvenient mistress who must be silenced . . . an ‘official’ inquiry in which Truth itself is under attack. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The New York Times said, “The story moves forward with relentless momentum. It is a political parable, and a stunning movie.”

Jeremy Piven at the Genesee Theatre
Genesee Theatre 203 N. Genesee Street Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787 After decades of playing fictional characters in over 70 movies and TV shows, actor/comedian Jeremy Piven returns to the stage to perform sketch comedy, a craft he cut his teeth on as a young Chicago stage actor. The Golden Globe and three-time Emmy-award winner grew up in Evanston and is an alumnus of his family's renowned Piven Theatre Workshop.

Oedipus Rex
James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts 19351 W. Washington Street Grayslake, IL 60030
Voice: 847.543.2000 While his city suffers from plague and ruin, Oedipus stands firm—a proud king who seems to have nothing to fear. Oedipus must solve the mystery of who murdered the previous king to save his city, and he is determined that no one will stand in his way. But in seeking the truth, his own worst nightmares come to light.
Written by Sophocles, ‘Oedipus Rex’ is considered to be Photo of cast members in Oedipus Rex performancethe greatest of all Greek plays, said Craig Rich, chair of CLC’s theatre department and director of the play. The CLC production is using a modern translation, by Stephen Berg and Diskin Clay, which was hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “daring and experimental.” Rich said, “The message of the drama feels so timely. ‘Oedipus Rex’ explores the relationship between a king and his people. Oedipus wants to save his people, but his over-confidence, paranoia and obsession brings about a tragic end. Audiences will find this play incredibly moving because it still has the power to shake us to our core.”

Art Exhibition: Head in the Trees
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods 21850 N. Riverwoods Rd. Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633 In Head in the Trees, artist Kaye Buchman addresses themes relating to the natural forces and regenerative energies found in our physical environment and the vital stories they tell. Her large scale drawings and mixed-media paintings begin with watercolor under-paintings and spills inspired by algae blooms overlaid with intricate pen & ink drawings. Her inspiration was found in the quiet presence of Ryerson Woods, the lively water currents of Lake Michigan, and the otherworldly qualities of southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest.
While researching native plant and tree colonies, migratory bird routes, and water currents for this series of work, Buchman was drawn to the life-affirming relationships that exist amongst these ecosystems and the messages they convey about our inter-connectedness. She was also been reminded of the importance of natural spaces for igniting imaginative thought and creative action. With a nod to fairytales and myths, and the potency of the whole of nature as an enduring metaphor, her goal is to bring attention to the intrinsic power of our natural environment and the responsibility we all share in ensuring its survival.

A Retrospective on the Caricatures of Native Son Frank Willmarth
Barrington History Museum 212 W. Main Street Barrington, IL 60010
Voice: 847.381.1730 Frank “Pancho” Willmarth was born right here in Barrington in 1906. After attending the University of Missouri as a journalism major and writing for a humorous newspaper during his time at the university, Frank headed west with hopes of pursuing a career where he could put his artistic talent to use. His travels took him all over the United States where he would sketch the people and the places that surrounded him where ever he was.
The first sketch he sold was after a football game in Salt Lake City, when his date never showed up he decided to sketch various aspects of the game and sold them to a local newspaper for a dollar. He was now a paid artist…. Frank’s true success would be realized in California.
Though still travelling throughout the state to sketch caricatures at fairs, carnivals, vacation spots and college campuses, his first major opportunity came in Los Angeles. Frank was a very kind and likeable man who got along with most people he met his sense of humor was contagious. This incidentally led to a great many connections, and an opportunity was given to Frank to sketch the who’s who in Hollywood for the Brown Derby Restaurant.
The Derby’s walls were lined with sketches of famous celebrities that would frequent the restaurant during the golden age of Hollywood. A great deal of the Brown Derby’s caricatures were done by Frank himself, which allowed him to meet some of the nation’s biggest stars.
His first job for the derby was to sketch Mae West and Rocky Marciano. Later on in his career he would be hired by the San Francisco Press club to sketch the club’s many guests who were not only Hollywood celebrities, but foreign diplomats, U.S. presidents, famous authors, and the occasional astronaut or FBI agent. Frank had the opportunity to get to know some of the world’s greatest individuals.
After an amazingly interesting career, Frank would eventually settle down with his wife Gertrude and their four children in an old mining town in Sierra County called Downieville where Frank was a columnist writing humorous articles for the Mountain Messenger, a local newspaper. Frank lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family and comforted by the memories and remarkable stories he had accumulated throughout his 96 years on Earth. Frank died in 2002 but this exhibit aims at resurrecting the man known as “Pancho”.
