A Subtle Beauty: The Landscape of Lake County, Illinois
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Road
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633.2424
Landscape artists often overlook the Midwest. While perhaps generally not as dramatic as that of other parts of the country, there is a subtle beauty to the Midwest landscape, and it rewards those who spend time observing it. This is especially true of Lake County’s open lands. The photographs that comprise this exhibit are part of my ongoing project to record that beauty. My hope is that having seen these photographs, viewers will take the time to enjoy the grace and quiet beauty of Lake County’s prairies, wetlands, lakes and fields. As a special treat, join us at 2pm for a special presentation: On Contested Ground: A History of Local Lands.

Renowned author and naturalist, Joel Greenberg, will join photographer John Wylie for a thought-provoking journey through the history of Chicago region landscapes. At 2pm, Greenberg will illuminate how these lands changed over the course of 300 years in his talk, 'On Contested Ground.'

When the first Europeans arrived at the southern end of Lake Michigan in the 1670s, they encountered a rich and diverse landscape largely carved by the last great glacial incursion. Grasslands dominated the flat areas that burned regularly, with transitional savannas and shrublands thriving where the flames appeared less frequently. In ravines and along the eastern shores of rivers, where the burning was infrequent, forests reined. Interspersed were varying kinds and sizes of lakes and wetlands, from Lake Michigan to the Kankakee Swamp encompassing up to a million acres.

Much has been lost, some has been saved, and we all have a role to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the natural beauty that remains.

Frank Caliendo at the Genesee Theatre
Genesee Theatre
203 N. Genesee Street
Waukegan, IL 60085
Voice: 800.982.2787
Comedian, actor and impressionist Frank Caliendo has been making people laugh his entire career. The master impressionist imitates celebrities, politicians and sports figures with spot-on accuracy and sidesplitting humor. Whether it's John Madden, Dr. Phil, Jon Gruden or Jay Leno, he captures every nuance of the people he impersonates. Some say he does a better Morgan Freeman than Morgan Freeman himself!

Born in Chicago and raised in Waukesha, WI, he started performing stand-up comedy at local nightclubs before graduating from UWM. His big break came when he joined the cast of MADtv and Fox NFL Sunday as its comedic prognosticator. He later appeared in his own comedy show, Frank TV and is a frequent guest on the late-night talk shows.

When he takes the stage, be prepared: your stomach muscles are going to get quite a workout!

Voice: 800.982.2787
Hairball recreates your favorite '80s arena rock songs for a night of spectacular hair metal bliss! It's not a tribute show but a re-enactment of some of the greatest hair bands of that opulent decade, complete with make-up and costume changes, confetti and pyrotechnics, smoke machines and props galore.

These guys are legit; over the past 17 years, they've been joined on stage by the likes of Gene Simmons, Alice Cooper, Vince Neil and Dee Snider. And they've performed everywhere – from Las Vegas to Sturgis, even London, England. With 3 lead singers, they put on a dizzying spectacle of non-stop rock you won't soon forget. Get ready to rock out at The Genesee!

Friday Night Live & Local Music Series - SharkDog
Wilmot Mountain - Main Lodge Bar
11931 Fox River Road
WIlmot, WI 53192
Voice: 2628622301
About the band:

Rock veterans bassist/vocalist John Barratt and guitarist Tom Massman, joined forces in the fall of 2014, with the intent of forming a modern pop/rock band to perform at festivals and clubs around the Chicago area. After months of auditions and failed attempts with other musicians, Scot Sinclair came along, liked what he heard, and added the additional lead vocal and guitar that John and Tom were looking for. About that same time, Tom got a call from his 70's bandmates, Blackwater Gold, to ask if he'd be interested in doing some select shows. Tom agreed, and after a couple rehearsals with Blackwater Gold, got to chatting with drummer Tim Peterson about joining the project with John and Scot. The boys started rehearsing, and things started coming together musically and vocally. The band ventured out of the basement in the early summer of 2015 to play a couple short events... with rave reviews... however the question of a permanent band name wast still up in the air. Until one sunny Sunday afternoon, enjoying some time on the lake, and discussing options for band names. All of a sudden, one of the guys spots a dog wearing a life vest with a shark fin on the back..... The rest is history in the making.... SharkDog.

Bluegrass with Don Stiernberg
Gorton Community Center
400 East Illinois Road
Lake Forest, IL 60045
Voice: 847.234.6060
Don Stiernberg and his band will return to Gorton to celebrate all that is bluegrass on the Cabin Fever Music Series!

A native Chicagoan, Don grew up 'out in the woods' in the nearly-rural suburb of Wauconda where 'a mandolin found him' and led to his passion for this unique instrument. Things came into focus both mandolin and life-wise when his parents sent Don to study with Jethro Burns, the greatest mandolinist of his time. From the very first lesson, Burns was more than a teacher; he was role model, hero, mentor, and friend, and Stiernberg was hooked and hooked bad. His earliest professional experience was in a bluegrass band with his brother(The Morgan Bros.)and a bit later in The Jethro Burns Quartet.

Plot summaries are the enemy of this twisty delight, which offers the addictive pleasures of a best-selling page-turner, the handsome period trappings of an Asian 'Downton Abbey' and an exploration of sexual imagery as intelligent as it is intense. A wealthy, bedridden heiress finds herself seduced by two new arrivals: a handsome count and an attentive female servant. But who is working for whom, and will the heart’s desires defeat the love of money? The AV Club wrote: 'The Handmaiden’ is a fiendishly clever, sinfully funny con-job melodrama … and quite improbably, the year’s most genuinely romantic movie.'

With accolades also including the top prize of the Franz Liszt Competition, the pianist has also drawn comparisons to the namesake, with the Charleston Post and Courier observing that “Lewin plays the Mephisto Waltz as Liszt must have—explosively and with much color and expression. … He not only has extraordinary talent, but charm, poise, and wit.” Lewin will make his Ravinia debut with what the Washington Post has also called “a controlled, awesomely intense style,” capable of making Chopin “roar passionately yet precisely” and weaving Prokofiev into “a web of childhood dreams and nightmares.”

Million Dollar Quartet takes you back to December 4, 1956, when a rare twist of fate brought together Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis for an unrehearsed recording session at Sun Records. Inspired by the incredible true story, this Tony Award® winning musical recreates the sights and sounds of these four rock 'n' roll stars before they became legends.

Featuring over 20 hit songs and dripping with nostalgia, the smash musical was an instant hit on Broadway. In Chicago, it became the city's 3rd longest running show.

Fifth House Ensemble
Ravinia
200 Ravinia Park Road
Highland Park, IL 60035
Voice: 847.266.5000
Named after the astrological “fifth house” of creativity and joy, the Fifth House Ensemble has brought those qualities to Chicago’s classical venues for over a decade, regularly impressing with “the sheer imaginative chutzpah these young performers bring to their envelope-pushing enterprise” (Chicago Tribune). A resident ensemble of the Music Institute of Chicago and curator of the Fresh Inc chamber music festival, Fifth House is a driving force behind elevating the musicianship of their contemporaries, but they also are devoted helping the next generation reach their artistic potential, regularly going into Chicago Public Schools with Ravinia’s Reach*Teach*Play programs and embarking on a second year of partnership with Loyola University. The 10-piece ensemble of strings and winds will bring the “conviction, authority, and finesse” (New York Times) of its essential repertoire of classical currency back to the Bennett Gordon Hall stage.

On this program, Fifth House Ensemble teams up with Grammy winner and 2017 Caramoor resident artist Jason Vieaux, “perhaps the most soulful classical guitarist of his generation” (NPR), to create a sonic journey ranging from centuries-old music to modern day works. Dan Visconti’s guitar concerto Living Language serves as the centerpiece of the program, which showcases a multitude of styles from Medieval plainchant to blues, rock, and Latin dance music, including works by Robert Beaser, Alonso Mudarra, Duke Ellington, Béla Bartók, and Pat Metheny.

Company: The Musical
P.M.&L. Theatre
877 Main Street
Antioch, IL 60002
Voice: 847.395.3433
Weekends from March 9 through March 25, 2018.

Company is a 1970 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. The original production was nominated for a record-setting fourteen Tony Awards and won six. Originally titled Threes, its plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday. Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As Sondheim puts it, Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we're going to bring it right back in their faces.

Voice: 815-344-1294
As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
