Trick or treat! Dust off the candy bags and buckets. Snip off stray strands from the costumes. And most of all for the parents, wear a nice pair of sneakers for walking! These are the trick or treat hours in Lake County 2022.

It’s that time when your youngsters go door-to-door in the neighborhood and demand people to smell their feet and provide their taste buds with some nourishing sugar treats.

Thrills and chills abound at Six Flags Great America with Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS®. Indulge in the theme park’s haunted houses, roller coasters and scare zones. The spooky spectacle features musical performances in the streets of Six Flags Great America. New for this year is Kids BOO Fest. The kid-friendly festival keeps the amusements tame during the day. Children can trick or treat on the Character Candy Trail, navigate through a hay maze and jive in the Monster Bash Dance Party. The family will work up an appetite while riding coasters, getting scared silly and dancing for the street shows. Grab a bite to eat at Six Flags Great America’s Oktoberfest Food Festival. The all-new smorgasbord is the perfect place to sit back with authentic German cuisine and beverages while listening to traditional music on the Mooseburger Patio in Yukon Territory. When the clock strikes 6 p.m., creatures adorned in ghoulish garb roam the park while spooking people walking through the scare zones. There are six haunted houses, each with its unique theme. The haunted houses require an extra pass and the park entrance fee. After 6 p.m., the festivities are geared toward individuals ages 13 and older. Lake Zurich is celebrating lighted pumpkins at Paulus Park. Jack-O’-Lantern World takes over the park starting Friday. The fantastic visual of thousands of illuminated, hand-carved pumpkins by over 50 local artisans is a unique seasonal sight. This orange-fruit display showcases a three-fourths mile trail highlighted by 17 immersive themed worlds of the jack-o’-lanterns. The event runs on select days through Halloween, and visitors must register online at TheJackoLanternWorld.com for their timeslots.

Didier Farms annual Pumpkinfest provides extravagant memories from the Lincolnshire/Prairie View Farm. The farm favorite features hayrides, pony rides, camel rides, kiddie rides, an exotic petting zoo, a parakeet exhibit, a corn maze and pig races. Don’t forget to visit Grandma D’s Bake Shop for scrumptious pies, cookies, fudge, homemade apple cider, kettle corn and pumpkin donuts. The farm’s doors are open through Halloween.

Richardson Adventure Farm is known for having the world’s most massive corn maze. The Spring Grove area spans 33 acres of land and is equipped with 11 miles of trails. This year, Richardson Adventure Farm’s corn maze theme celebrates the 60th anniversary of the “James Bond” movie series. Besides the renowned maze, the Adventure Farm features another five mazes, a zip line, a pumpkin patch, ORBiting rides (a ride inside a giant 11-football), live pig races, a wooded picnic area, free campfires, pedal carts, pedal trikes, a goat farm, a corn cabin and wagon rides. Other activities have separate admissions.

Friday of this pumpkin bonanza features trick-or-treating throughout the festival grounds between 4-6 p.m. This free festival has a massive selection of fun activities, including food trucks, pumpkin treats in all shapes and sizes, musical performances, carnival rides, pumpkin carving, an arts and crafts fair, hay rides and much more.

The Waukegan Park District is partnering with Sugar Skulls Xilotl (formerly Academia Cultural Xilotl) to celebrate Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)! They are hosting the Sugar Skull Workshops and a community celebration at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Waukegan. Día de Muertos is a celebration of the lives of the deceased and has origins in Mexico. The holiday is traditionally celebrated throughout Latin America. The event will feature altar exhibits, art vendors, food, music, dance presentations, and sugar skull workshops.

Ghost Stories Plus! at Volo Bog State Natural Area (October 8-9)

Experience the spookier side of this beautiful area and hear tales that could be true or just fun to listen to. Which is which? Well, you’ll have to be there when the sun sets. Jim May of The Friends of Volo Bog will tell tales about the Haunted Woods and more. Autumn refreshments are available for sale in the Visitor Center to keep you from becoming parched!

What’s all of the hubbub happening in Deerfield? The village’s park district is hosting its annual Halloween Hoopla. This celebration is broken into three parts to make the most of the spookiest month of the year. The hoopla kicks off this weekend and is highlighted by pumpkin decorating, food, games and autumn arts & crafts. Other events include pumpkin decorating, haunted ceramics and a haunted hustle and monster dash (5K or a one-mile run - including a costume contest).

More than 1,000 hand-carved pumpkins, some as large as 150 pounds, will light up the night at the Chicago Botanic Garden's Halloween event. This night of one thousand glowing pumpkins in the crisp fall air will make kids and adults alike laugh with enjoyment. As you stroll the sanctuary, refreshments and seasonal fares will be served along the character path.

Bring the family to Lake County Forest Preserves District’s long-standing tradition of the Halloween Hikes! Join a guided group hike along a candlelit path in Ryerson Woods to watch fun nature-themed skits, followed by donuts and cider in front of a fire in a log cabin. This Halloween program is in no way, shape or form scary, so even the family’s youngest members will have fun. Hikes last 90 minutes, and each group departs in 30-minute intervals. The candlelit path is approximately one-and-a-half miles long.

Go on an evening walk with other ghosts and goblins at the Century Park Pavilion in Vernon Hills. Ghouls, witches and goblins of all ages are invited to dress up in their Halloween costumes. Bring your leashed dogs, too. Join Vernon Hills Park District staff on a 30-minute/two-mile walk around the park. They light up the path with glow sticks, too (provided). Meet at the Century Park Pavilion at 6 p.m.
