The #1stMarineDivision logo was the first to be approved during that war, commemorating the division's sacrifices and victory in the Battle for #Guadalcanal. Featuring the National Colors - red, white, and blue - the unit insignia includes white stars atop a night-sky blue background, symbolizing the Southern Cross constellation, under which the Guadalcanal fighting took place. #marines #semperfi #marinecorps #bluediamond #1stmardiv #usmc #?️

"You sunk my Battleship." No, it's not the Hasbro Games classic, but the National Museum of the American Sailor invites the Historical Miniature Gaming Society-Midwest for an educational and fun re-creation of Guadalcanal. The Guadalcanal is the first major offensive victory during WWII over the Empire of Japan that took place at the British Solomon Islands. The battle was fought for just over six months. The Naval Station Great Lakes museum will explore the strategy and tactics as well as the historical significance of the win. Codename: Operation Watchtower is a commemoration to the 75th anniversary of the event.

Saturday, February 9; 1-5 p.m. National Museum of the American Sailor, 2531 Sheridan Rd., Great Lakes.

Black History Month Program in Zion (Feb. 23)

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson helped start Negro History Week. February was chosen because the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln were in February. Negro History Week promoted the of study of African Americans, which Woodson felt had been "overlooked, ignored and even suppressed by writers of history textbooks." Black History Month was first celebrated at Kent State in 1970.

Black History Month is not only celebrated in the United States, but it's also an annual observance in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. However, just the two aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries celebrate it in February. Historian Carter G. Woodson created it in 1926 as it also is the same month that hosts notable Civil Rights figures Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Zion-Benton High School and the Zion Park District host a program that includes a diaspora of singing, dancing, guest speakers and poets. The family-friendly celebration also provides a delicious dinner following the program.

Saturday, February 23; Free admission. Zion-Benton Horizon Campus High School, 3921 21st St., Zion.
