1. Apple Fest in Historic Downtown Long Grove

Apples are a timeless treat that can be prepared in various ways, no matter how you want to eat (and drink) them. Any way to get them into your belly is on display at Apple Fest in beautiful Historic Downtown Long Grove. The fare festival has all the staples, including pies, cakes, candies, crisps, sundaes, dips, donuts covered in chocolate or caramel, sauce, cider, wine, mead, beer, as a modern infusion, freshly picked and more. The succulent celebration also features pie-eating contests, kid’s activities, carnival rides and an artisan market. The stage areas showcase live entertainment featuring Sixteen Candles, Charlie Foxtrot, Libido Funk Circus, ARRA, 7th Heaven and more talented acts. Regular admission is $5 per day, or purchase a three-day pass for $10. Kids 12 years old and under are free. The carnival requires a $25 wristband separate from the festival pass, regardless of age. 2. 95 WIIL Rock Fest at Lake County Fairgrounds

Come ready to dance at 95 WIIL Rock Fest and celebrate 30 years of music. This festival hosted by the Lake County Fairgrounds and Event Center features live music acts Shinedown, Falling in Reverse, Jelly Roll and more. The Homegrown Stage showcases a variety of local talent, including The Heroes Lie, Lines of Loyalty, Lake Effect and more. Tickets start at $85 for a single pass, and $64 per ticket when you buy a set of four or $250 for a VIP ticket. Parking at the Grayslake facility costs $20 cash. 3. Fall on the Farm at Lambs Farm

Old Lake County had a Lambs Farm, E-I-E-I-O. The Libertyville/Green Oaks estate is celebrating its fourth annual Fall on the Farm this weekend. The event celebrates the individuals who make Lambs Farm’s mission possible. Activities include the barrel train ride, touch a tractor, crafts, games, inflatables and access to the animals. The fall fest is also highlighted by a beer tent, live entertainment and a vendor fair. Visit the Dogwood Garden Pet Center to adopt adorable puppies and kittens. Stroll to the Magnolia Café & Bakery for delectable treats and sweets. The Sugar Maple Country Store has unique treasures and souvenirs. Learn about the farmyard stock of Lambs Farm at the Keeper Chats. Admission for children is $15 and $8 for adults. No entry fee is required to experience the beer tent, live music and vendor fair. 4. "Hello, Dolly" at the Lincolnshire Marriott Theatre

Play matchmaker and watch as Thornton Wilder’s 1954 Broadway hit is brought to life in “Hello, Dolly!” at Lincolnshire’s Marriott Theatre. The renowned comedic production follows the story of Dolly Levi and her adventure trying to marry wealthy Manhattanite Horace Vandergelder. Along the way, she plays matchmaker to a unique cast of characters and tells a hilarious story of romance. The talented cast’s acting skills are on full display as they take direction from two-time Tony Award nominee Denis Jones (Marriott and Broadway’s “Holiday Inn,” “Honeymoon in Vegas” and Broadway’s “Tootsie”). Marriott Theatre-favorite Heidi Kettenring (“The King & I,” “Cats,” “Footloose” and “Funny Girl”) takes the reins in the lead role as the titular Dolly. The music and lyrics are composed and written by Jerry Herman. The Marriott Theatre production runs on select days through October 16.

5. Hike Lake County in the Lake County Preserves

Do you have an autumn feel and enjoy staying active on the trails of the Lake County Forest Preserves District (LCFPD)? Explore the trails as part of the Hike Lake County program. Check the trailheads for the Hike Lake County logo when you prepare to embark. Complete at least seven designated trails that bare the program’s logo and add them to your hiking log. Download the trail log at LCFPD.org and track your distances. Successful completion of the challenge awards hikers a commemorative medallion. Dogs are welcome to join you, too, but you and your canine companion must stay on pet-friendly trails. If you complete the Hike Lake County challenge with your pooch, they will earn a commemorative dog tag. Trail logs can be submitted online or in person at the general office in Libertyville or the Brushwood Center in Riverwoods. Biking and horse trail travel are not permitted on the Hike Lake County challenge. Visit LCFPD.org for travel logs and challenge information. Hike Lake County runs through November 30.
