The holidays may be over, but that doesn’t mean winter festivities have come to an end. Bundle up for an afternoon at Century Park in Vernon Hills Winter Fest. The family-friendly celebration features rides on a horse-drawn carriage, watch The Free Spirit Sled Dog Demo Team showcase their skills, cozy up by the fire and munch on tasty s’mores. Fest-goers can also partake in outdoor ice skating and sledding (weather permitting).

Looking “fore” some winter fun this weekend? Head over to Bittersweet Golf Club for Gurnee’s Frosty Fest. The event hosted by the Gurnee Park District features a wide variety of winter activities for the whole family. Watch ice sculptors create their magic, take an exhilarating carriage ride, race down a hill on your sled and more winter-themed festivities. Take a break from the action with complimentary s’mores and hot cocoa. The availability of some activities is weather dependent. Street parking is not permitted, but overflow parking is available at Woodland Middle School. Shuttle buses frequently run between the school and golf course.

The Park District of Highland Park is hosting its Winter Fest at Centennial Ice Arena. The celebration is highlighted by ice skating, open gymnastics and hockey sessions. A skate instructor will be in attendance, providing novice ice dancers, speed skaters and hockey lamplighters with group lessons. Winter-themed characters will roam the ice arena for a meet and greet and photo-ops. The celebration also offers bites for purchase.

Summertime isn’t the only time to explore the beauties of the Volo Bog State Natural Area. Visit the state’s only quaking bog for their unique winter celebration that has plenty to offer for the entire family. The Ingleside natural area’s event is highlighted by guided tours, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing if there is fresh powder, a snow sculpting contest, indoor craft making. Refreshments like hot cocoa will be available for purchase. The River Valley Rangers will be playing live bluegrass music.
Sunday, January 12; 1-4 p.m. Suggested Donation: $5. Children’s admission: Free. Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd., Ingleside.
