Did you know that Lake County has over 30 outdoor ice skating areas? On a beautiful winter’s day, there’s no better place to be than enjoying the beautiful scenery and making memories with friends and family while ice skating on an outdoor rink.
Before heading out to the ice, there are a few things you need to know! 1. - Always call ahead to make sure that the rink is open 2. – Check the ice conditions with the weather hotlines below. If there's a weather advisory, it might be a good idea to try an indoor activity, until it clears up a little. (Check out alternative things to do here!) 3. – Bundle up and if you’re skating with little ones, stick to some of the rinks with warming houses.
Lake County Forest Preserves Ice Skating Ice must be at least 4 inches thick on ponds (and in some places, 6 inches) for ice skating. Be sure to call the Winter Sports Hotline at 847.968.3235 for current weather conditions!
Lakewood in Wauconda - Man-made skating pond - Lighted and open until 9 p.m. daily when conditions allow - Main entrance: are located on Route 176, just west of Fairfield Road - Go to east entrance for the Winter Sports Area
- Man-made lighted skating pond - Open daily until sunset when conditions allow - Entrance/parking lot: St. Mary's Road just south of Rt. 176, and north of Rt. 60 (Townline Rd.)
Village of Deer Park - Located on Deer Grove Lake - Minimum of 4” of ice over entire lake is recommended. - Hours 8 a.m. - sunset
Independence Grove in Libertyville - 16400 W Buckley Rd,Libertyville - Designated skating area is on the southern end of the lake - Open until sunset

The rink will be opened daily from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. for general skating, and will be open for hockey between the hours of 8-10 a.m. and 8 - 10 p.m. daily provided a permit is obtained from the Parks and Recreation office (806 Holbeck Dr.)
