Hawaii Comes to Visit! Chicago Botanic Garden's Orchid Show

By: Jonathan Jones 02/20/2014

I recently visited the Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden.  What a great escape from winter!  As much as I'd love to be able to hop on a plane and see these beautiful flowers in their natural Hawaiian habitats, this is definitely the next best thing. Warm temperatures in the greenhouses, plenty of happy and smiling faces, and let's not forget over 12,000 orchids decorating every surface and corner in sight... it's the perfect pick me up to get us through to spring!

Here are a few photos from the Orchid Show.  Be sure to share yours with us on Instagram and Twitter with #VisitLakeCounty

The Chicago Botanic Garden's Orchid Show runs Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. through March 16.  Like always, admission to the gardens is free, but admission to the Orchid show is $10 Adult & $8 for Seniors and Children.

During the weekends of Feb. 14-16 & 21-23, learn about Hawaiian culture and the role these beautiful flowers and other plant life continue to play in ancient traditions.

Learn how different patterns carved into bamboo create a visual representation of families, villages and folklore through the art of stamping. (Left)

See how large sheets of paper are made by hand from the bark of a Mulberry Tree! (Below)

The Orchid display really shows off the best sides of the Hawaiian Islands.  But the beautiful live island music and traditional hula dancing certainly didn't hurt either!

(Hawaiian days' final weekend is 2/22-2/23.)
