Great Lakes 4th of July Celebration to return in 2014

Capt. Bill Bulis, Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Commanding Officer, announced today that the installation's internationally recognized 4th of July Celebration will return in 2014. After cancellation of last year's event due to the circumstances surrounding the federal government's budget issues, the multi-day event will return as a two-day festival, open to the general public.

The NSGL Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) Department plans the entertainment and festival components. MWR Director John Prue has indicated that MWR will organize this year's event to be similar in size and scope to the last celebration in 2012. The festival will be held on Thursday, July 3, 4-11 p.m., and on Friday, July 4, 3-10 p.m. Both nights will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display choreographed to music.

In addition to fireworks, live bands, roving entertainment, a carnival, a 5K run and one of the best food festivals in the area are all being planned for this year's two-day celebration. For more information checkout the event's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GreatLakes4thofJuly, or at www.mwrgl.com.

NSGL continues to serve as the "Quarterdeck of the Navy." More than 20,000 military and civilian personnel work, train and live aboard the installation. NSGL is now 102 years old. It, along with the mission here, has been in constant change, allowing NSGL-based training commands to prepare Sailors for an increasingly sophisticated and technology-based Navy. Since the first group of recruits reported for training July 1, 1911, more than 3.5 million Sailors have started their Navy careers in northern Illinois. NSGL includes 1,153 buildings with thirty-nine on the National Register of Historic Places. The installation encompasses 1,628 acres and uses 50 miles of roadways to provide access to the station's facilities.
