he Program for Singers offers a unique setting for 15 classical singers to delve deeply into the vast repertoire of art song for three weeks. Fellows are paired with staff collaborative pianists to work with a faculty of distinguished musicians, pedagogues, and scholars on varied aspects of vocal performance, including style, technique, language, diction, dramaturgy, performance, and career preparation.
In addition to several afternoon and evening concerts presented during the summer, the musicians participate in a series of public master classes, where the faculty or a Ravinia guest artist provide in-the-moment insights on the fellows’ performances of excerpts from their repertoire, guiding both the growth of their interpretations and sharing the experience with all in attendance.
This master class is led by soprano Ailyn Pérez, who has starred at Ravinia in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Magic Flute and returns in the midst of making her title role debut in Dvořák’s Rusalka with Santa Fe Opera. In the fall, she is scheduled to make title role debuts in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (Teatro di San Carlo) and Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas (Metropolitan Opera), having recently sung her first Puccini Tosca with San Francisco Opera, where she had trained in the Merola Opera Program. Among her many international accolades as a singer “who truly seems to have it all” (Opera News), Pérez was the first Latine recipient of the Richard Tucker Award, named its winner in 2012.
