Each year, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is one of the City's most anticipated, exciting, and meaningful events. By marking Dr. King's birthday with community-focused service, everyone is honoring his example of servant leadership.
Due to COVID-19, the 12th Annual Day of Service event has been reimagined by the Human Relations Advisory Group in a virtual format to safely engage community members in a shared, meaningful experience. The live Zoom event will begin at 10:00 AM on January 18, 2021, and will feature keynote speakers followed by a Q&A, remote service projects, donation collection, related virtual presentations, and more. Musicians from Highland Park High School will also provide musical tributes to Dr. King. A list of service providers and at-home service projects will be available at cityhpil.com/mlk, along with a new essay contest, an interactive trivia quiz, and presentations from several Highland Park and Highwood organizations to educate and entertain in an effort to further Dr. King’s legacy.
Please join in on Monday, January 18, 2021, for the live program via Zoom. Many suggested activities are already on the City's website, and new items will be added daily. Browse through the list of ideas with your family and make a plan for how you'll honor Dr. King's legacy to ensure that his birthday is a day "on" - not a day off.
