In most years the community is called to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day "on", not a day off, and volunteer their time in honor of the civil rights leader. The same is true at College of Lake County (CLC) which in the past has partnered with United Way of Lake County to organize hundreds of volunteers to work projects at area social service agencies and schools. Unfortunately, the 2021 holiday will not be treated the same due to safety considerations related to COVID-19. However, the day will not pass without recognition. At least one CLC tradition will continue: a dramatic storytelling of Dr. King's life and impact on civil rights.
This year they are partnering with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Chi Lambda chapter, based in Waukegan. Dr. King was a member of this fraternity. Normally they would hold a breakfast in his honor. This year they are partnering with CLC to present 'Know Your History to Guide Your Future,' a virtual event.
