Fall festivals are the place to be in autumn. Take to the trails of Lake County after enjoying various fares to burn off some of those calories and snap some pictures.
Here are the things to do this weekend October 28-30, 2022.
1. Lincolnshire's Boo Bash in North Park

Round up the little ghouls, goblins and witches for Lincolnshire’s annual Boo Bash at North Park. The family-friendly Halloween party features a live DJ, a haunted trail, a haunted house, bouncy inflatables, the three-story Titanic slide, a zombie maze, R/C car races, pumpkin decorating and more. The Lincolnshire Police Department, Fire Department and Public Works are on the scene to ensure that kids get their fill of trunk-or-treating from the service vehicles. The Daniel Wright Junior High School band plays catchy tunes and the Lincolnshire Bolts Poms & Dance team spin and tumble to the awe of guests. Renowned magician, The Great Boodini mesmerizes with two shows and occasionally asks for assistance from the crowd. Food trucks are serving fare for purchase while everyone scares up an appetite. Lincolnshire’s annual Boo Bash is free to attend, but donations of non-perishable foods are requested.

2. Dracula: A Live Radio Play at Improv Playhouse

The titular vampire “vants to suck your blood” at Libertyville’s Improv Playhouse. The professional troupe brings to life their interpretation of the 1938 Orson Welles Mercury Radio Theatre production of “Dracula: A Live Radio Play.” Audiences will conjure frightening images of terror as the thespians spin the Bram Stoker classic. Through various sound effects and visual ensembles, guests experience the adventure that radio listeners of the old days could only wish to witness. Improv Playhouse encourages guests to dress in their Halloween best. Guests ages 21 and older may bring their own beverages but must pay a $5 corking fee. 3. Svengoolie Meet & Greet at Volo Museum

Before hitting the haunted trails for trick-or-treating, visit the Volo Museum and meet Svengoolie. Berwyn’s beloved horror-show host donning the top hat and meets guests to sign autographs, make rubber chicken jokes and take photographs. Meeting Svengoolie is free for guests, but regular museum admission prices apply. Get to Volo Museum early because he is there from noon to 2 p.m. Svengoolie airs nationally on MeTV and has run locally for more than 40 years. Don’t forget to visit the rest of the museum and Jurassic Gardens. Volo Museum features 45 exhibits covering various vehicle genres, automotive oddities and iconic Hollywood cars. 4. Halloween Trick or Treat Trail in Zion

Give the family car a spooky makeover and cram the little goblins in for Zion’s Halloween Trail of Treats. Candy seekers begin the trail at the Port Shiloh Pool parking lot. Visitors drive through Shiloh Park, where businesses, organizations and public works departments host candy stops and hand out treats. Participants are required to stay inside their vehicles as they cruise through the park. Walk-up bags are available at Kiwanis Shelter at Bethel Boulevard and 27th Street.

5. Vernon Hills Fall Fest

Gather the little monsters for a Halloween extravaganza at Vernon Hills Fall Fest. The spooky festivities are held at the Sullivan Community Center and feature indoor trick-or-treating, a magic show, a black light dance party and the annual costume contest. All guests must register to attend this haunted happening, including the elderly spirits bringing the tiny terrors. Refreshments and snacks are available for purchase while everybody does their best Monster Mash and scares up an appetite. Visit VHParkDistrict.org to register for this hallowed gathering.

6. Last Weekend of Spooks & Spirits Check-In Challenge

Participants check-in for the challenge via mobile device through October 31 when visiting a participating winery, distillery or brewery. 7. Last Weekend at Didier Farms Pumpkinfest

Oh my gourd-ness, it’s the last weekend to experience Didier Farms’ Pumpkinfest and quaint farmstand. The Lincolnshire/Prairie View area farm features edible creations, kid’s rides, an animal land zoo, the final pig races, straw and corn mazes, a pumpkin playland, horse-drawn rides and everyone’s favorite enormous orange berry. New for this year is the “Wheels of Agriculture Game Show,” where participants can test their knowledge of all things farming. After the farmyard fun, walk to Grandma D’s Bake Shop for taffy apples, gourmet eats and sweet fall treats or get lunch at the Pumpkin Patch Café to wrap up the day. Admission to this pumpkin party is free, and all other rides and amusements require tickets that can be purchased for $1 each. Didier Farms Pumpkinfest ends on October 30.

8. Last Weekend at Six Flags Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS®

The crypt beckons the ghouls, zombies and ethereal terrors to return to their places of slumber for the last weekend of Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS®. Indulge in the Gurnee theme park’s haunted houses, roller coasters, scare zones and live shows. The spooky spectacle features musical performances in the streets of Six Flags Great America. New for this year is Kids BOO Fest. The kid-friendly festival keeps the amusements tame during the day. Children can trick or treat on the Character Candy Trail, navigate through a hay maze and jive in the Monster Bash Dance Party. When the clock strikes 6 p.m., creatures adorned in ghoulish garb roam the park while spooking people walking in the scare zones. There are six haunted houses, each one with a unique theme. The haunted houses require an extra pass and the park entrance fee. After 6 p.m., the festivities are geared toward individuals ages 13 and older. While in the park, try a variety of craft and seasonal beers complemented by German-inspired fare for Oktoberfest Food Festival. Visit the Mooseburger Patio on select dates to sample a variety of entrees, appetizers, desserts and snacks. Oktoberfest Food Festival at Six Flags Great America goes through November 13.
