Eat, dance and paddle (or sink) for the things to do this weekend of August 12-14, 2022. The end of summer may be nigh, but we aren't slowing down in Lake County.

1. Taste of The Towns in Lake Zurich

Indulge in a fare journey this Sunday at Lake Zurich’s Paulus Park for the Taste of the Towns. Sample the bites from local eateries, restaurants, caterers and food retailers. Many vendors will be in attendance like Lake County Libation Trail partners Copper Fiddle Distillery, Roaring Table Brewing Co., Phase Three Brewing Co. of Lake Zurich and more.  Local eatery La Parroquia Mexican Pancake House hosts a contest where 10 competitors faceoff for a winner-take-all burrito challenge. The contestant eating the most of a five-pound burrito wins a cash prize. The 16th installment of this foodie fest also features family activities like a performance from the Glowby Bubbler, a kids car painting experience and a temporary tattoo artist. Live music by Heather Moran and Ned Abderholden indulges your auditory senses while the taste palette finds new favorites. Admission includes one taste from each vendor, and additional tasting tickets are available for purchase. An event lanyard provides one sample from each vendor, costs $30 online and $40 at the gate. 2. O.A.R., G. Love and Dispatch at Ravinia Festival

Three legendary musical performances play on the same stage at Ravinia Festival this Saturday in Highland Park. Be soothed by the crunchy jams of Dispatch, rock out in a “crazy game of poker” with O.A.R. and embrace the rhythmic melting pot tunes that only G. Love makes. Dispatch shares music from their eighth full-length collection, “Break Our Fall,” featuring an energetic mix of folk, reggae and blues. O.A.R. is a multi-generation favorite with 25 years of hits. G. Love is a renowned artist on the jam band festival circuit and returns to Ravinia after a decade as the show’s opener during a memorable night. The three acts are touring together for the first time. 3. Fox Lake Cardboard Boat Race

Compete to make the swiftest vessel at the Fox Lake Cardboard Boat Race. Races begin Sunday morning at Lakefront Park to see who sinks, floats and finishes the race. Competitors create their boats and pay a $15 registration fee. Competitors without a watercraft can pay $30 for registration and receive a boat building kit. The kit includes a roll of duct tape, a box cutter and an 8-foot by 4-foot sheet of cardboard to craft their vessel. Competition groups include ages 11 and under; 12 to 18 years of age; 19 years old and up. Trophies are awarded for first and second place finishes, fastest sinking and Best of Show. The race is free for spectators and begins at noon.

Sunday, August 14; 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission: $15-$30, free for spectators. Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd., Fox Lake.

4. Model Trains and Butterflies at the Chicago Botanic Garden

The Chicago Botanic Garden has only begun to “Flourish” as the timeless attraction turned 50 this year. The Glencoe sanctuary celebrates its birthday through September 25 with various events the whole family can enjoy. The Model Railroad Garden features 18 G-Scale model trains passing through 50 miniature American landmarks. The floral and handmade exhibit runs on 1,600 feet of track throughout the 7,500-square-foot garden. Another must-see exhibit is the Butterflies and Blooms. The 2,800 square-foot enclosed habitat showcases myriad butterflies from four continents, including native Illinois insects. The Model Train Railroad and Butterflies and Blooms exhibits run through August 31. The uniquely floral “Flourish” experience runs through September 25. Visit ChicagoBotanic.org for more details.

5. Antioch Food Truck FEASTival

Bring an appetite to Toft Avenue in Antioch for the Food Truck FEASTival on Sunday afternoon. Five food trucks will park and serve their respective fares. Sample through Hawaiian cuisine with a twist of Asian fusion at Da Local Boy food truck. Savor locally sourced grilled meats and vegetables by ordering a kabob through the window of 15 Lake Mobile Bistro. Let the taste buds dance with Mexican cuisine and desserts by going with the Casa Ruiz truck. The Lumpia Lady food truck sells Filipino delicacies like lumpia, pansit and leche flan. Finally, cool down the palate with frozen treats and order a cone at Crazee Ice food truck. Each truck varies in cost and what they offer during the day. Antioch’s Food Truck FEASTival runs every second and fourth through late September.
