Powerhouse singer and Chicago native Jennifer Hudson makes her highly
anticipated Ravinia Festival debut at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, with a second concert
at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17. Beginning her career as one of the finalists on American Idol,
she made waves for her role in the movie version of the musical Dreamgirls, winning the
Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actress. Hudson's self-titled debut album won the
Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2008. This spring she released her new album I Remember
Me. R&B singer Miguel, whose hits Sure Thing and All I Want is You have recently
topped the charts, opens both concerts. This is Miguel's Ravinia debut. Pavilion and lawn
tickets are available for the July 17 show, and only lawn tickets are available for July 16.
Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra summer
residency at Ravinia this season, the CSO performs two all-Brahms evenings led by
celebrated conductor Christoph von Dohnányi and featuring pianist Emanuel Ax. At 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, the program will include Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor and Symphony No. 2 in D Major, and at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 15, Symphony No. 3 in F Major and Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major will be performed. In addition to guest engagements with the major opera houses and orchestras of Europe and North America, von Dohnányi's appointments have included opera directorships in Frankfurt and Hamburg, principal orchestral conducting posts in Germany, London and Paris and his legendary 20-year tenure as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. Ax has received Grammy® awards for the second and third volumes of his cycle of Haydn's piano sonatas and has also made a series of Grammy-winning recordings with Yo-Yo Ma of the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano. A special pavilion ticket package is available for both concerts for $100, and a pavilion ticket and dining package for both nights is available for $160.
For nearly a decade celebrated violinist/violist Pinchas Zukerman has teamed up with his most promising protégés to present chamber music concerts of impeccable musicianship. The Zukerman ChamberPlayers return to Ravinia's Martin Theatre for two performances, the first at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, featuring works of Mozart, Schumann and Brahms. At 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, Emanuel Ax joins them to perform
DvoYák's Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81. This program also includes works by Mozart and Beethoven.
Ravinia's summer music conservatory, the Steans Music Institute, brings together talented young musicians from around the world to make music coached by an internationally renowned faculty. Piano and strings artists will present a chamber music concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 11, in Bennett Gordon Hall. This performance will include Mendelssohn's String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20, and is only $10 for a reserved seat. There will be no lawn sales at this concert. At 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, piano and strings artists will present a free concert in Bennett Gordon Hall. Prior to the CSO concerts on Thursday, July 14, and Friday, July 15, Steans musicians will appear in preview concerts at 5:45 p.m. in Bennett Gordon Hall.
