The Illinois Association of Park Districts has informed the Waukegan Park District that it received the prestigious Distinguished Agency Accreditation from the Joint Distinguished Park and Recreation Agency Accreditation Committee. The Accreditation is for 2010-2015 and follows the Distinguished Agency Award first achieved in 2005. Board of Commissioners President Wayne Motley is pleased by the Accreditation decision, stating: The Waukegan Park District has high standards of excellence and this recognition by peer professionals confirms we are truly serving the community of Waukegan by delivering exceptional facilities, programs and services. To date, only 13 of approximately 300 Illinois Park Districts have earned this Accreditation. A Distinguished Agency Accreditation plaque will be awarded at the Annual State Conference on January 28, 2011 at the Chicago Hilton Hotel.
The District earned a total of 490.706 points out of 500points. Bonus points were earned in the areas of management and special facilities. In a letter from the committee chairpersons to the District, it was stated, The Waukegan Park District Board and staff are to be congratulated on this achievement. By dedicating the time to go through the review and compilation of materials, as well as, the evaluation process, the Waukegan Park District has shown a commitment to meeting the highest standards of our profession. This accomplishment is most noteworthy and reflects credit upon the board of Park Commissioners, the Executive Director, the administration team and the entire park district staff. When a district earns enough base points to achieve Accreditation, it is apparent that every facet of the organization is deserving of recognition.
About the Waukegan Park District
Established on December 26, 1916 the district has 47 properties and 720 acres of land, which includes the 18-hole Bonnie Brook and the 9-hole Greenshire Golf Courses. The District operates recreational centers, the Field House Sports and Fitness Center, the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, an outdoor swimming pool, outdoor sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, the Waukegan Skate Park, and the Waukegan BMX track. A full range of programs and services are offered year round for all ages including special populations. Cultural events are provided by the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorus, the Bowen Park Theatre Company, and the Waukegan History Museum. Sixty-one authorized full-time staff and over 250 part-time, year round, seasonal and temporary employees. The district is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD), and Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). The district maintains IAPD Distinguished Agency accreditation and is also accredited with the Park District Risk Management Agency and maintains a Level A Loss Control Program.
