Guided Forest Therapy Walk with Linda Karlen at Volo Bog State Natural Area
Volo Bog State Natural Area
Volo, IL
Voice: 815.344.1294
Medical studies can now confirm what many people have felt for years – being in nature is good for us. A practice of immersing ourselves in the natural world can help us de-stress, improve concentration, and boost our immune systems. In turn, we can be good for nature, building a relationship that helps us protect and support nature in our more-than-human world. The Association of Nature & Forest Therapy Guides and Programs has developed guided walks that help participants create or deepen meaningful relationships with nature. Walks are typically 2-3 hours and cover a mile or less. Guides rely on sensory awareness and shared observations to create a meaningful and fun experience. You’re invited to join Linda Karlen, trained Forest Therapy Guide. Geared to adults and interested youth ages 11 and up. Registration is requested at 815-344-1294 or dnr.volobog@illinois.gov - please tell us how many people and ages of minors. Group size is limited - Walk-ins welcome if space allows but walk may be cancelled if minimum registration is not met 24 hours prior.

Matter and Desire: An Erotic Ecology
Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 N. Riverwoods Road
Riverwoods, IL 60015
Voice: 224.633.2424
In partnership with the Center for Humans and Nature, Brushwood Center invites you to join us for a Walk and Talk with Andreas Weber, on tour in the U.S. to share and discuss his new book: Matter and Desire: An Erotic Ecology.

In Matter and Desire, internationally renowned biologist and philosopher Andreas Weber rewrites ecology as a tender practice of forging relationships, of yearning for connections, and of expressing these desires through our bodies. Being alive is an erotic process—constantly transforming the self through contact with others, desiring ever more life. Although rooted in scientific observation, Matter and Desire becomes a tender philosophy for the Anthropocene, a “poetic materialism,” that closes the gap between mind and matter.
To start off the event, we are planning a 4pm walk in Ryerson Woods with the author. Join Andreas and staff, as we shuffle through fall leaves, experience the DesPlaines River banks in all it’s beauty, and follow the trails back to Brushwood Center to enjoy Andreas’ talk, with light refreshments and a hearty discussion.

“The most powerful antidote to our pernicious culture of excessive material consumption is the creation and nurturing of communities, finding happiness in human relationships rather than seeking it in material possessions. An important and inspiring book!”—Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life; coauthor of The Systems View of Life.

Space for this program is limited, so register as soon as possible. Fee for the "talk" portion is $5 per person, attendees may apply this fee to a book purchase. Register below or call 224-633-2426.

Stroll through the farmyard and visit with horses, llamas, goats, potbelly pigs, miniature cattle, equine, sheep and more at Lambs Farm petting zoo. With an abundance of animals, there’s no telling which one will be your favorite.
Stop at the small animal area to have a close encounter with a rabbit or chick and make sure to visit the Discovery Center to see how you “measure up” against some of the animals in the farmyard.
Kids will also love playing miniature golf, taking a ride on the miniature train and enjoying the old world carousel with brightly colored horses!

But when the newspaper publishing titans raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to fight them. With music by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast) and book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Kinky Boots), this recent Broadway smash is a high-energy musical thrill for the whole family!

9 Wicked Monster Shows at the Park This Fall
Six Flags Great America & Hurricane Harbor
542 N. Route 21
Gurnee, IL 60031
Our Fright Fest shows will leave you howling for more. This fall we have nine killer live performances that feature the best in Halloween music, bone-rattling choreography, and wicked talented monsters. Check the Monstertainment guide or mobile app for show times on the day you visit.

1. New! The Ringmaster’s Cabaret: Our twisted circus features peculiar performers and shocking feats. Witness a display of dark magic, vanishing illusions, daring contortionism, and powerful trickery. At the Grand Music Hall.

2. The Cavalcade of the Odd: You’ll never be able to forget the horrors you see at our freak show. Creepy misfits step into the spotlight to showcase their unnatural acts and horrifying oddities. You’ll shudder at their death-defying acts, like walking on shattered glass, a bed of nails, fire-eating, and sword-swallowing. At the Mardi Gras Stage.

3. Zombie Jamboree Dance Party: This is one of the most family-friendly monster parties we offer. Rock out with our talented performers and characters to sing and dance to spooktacular Halloween tunes. At Mardi Gras.

4. LightmosFEAR: It’s only here you’ll find the world’s largest synchronized LED light show on the world’s largest carousel. Every six minutes at the entrance of the park, Carousel Plaza lights up with a stunning visual show. The colorful lights dance to a Halloween soundtrack, flashing and flickering in hypnotic synchronization. In Carousel Plaza.

5. The Uprising Parade: Nightly Call of the Dead: This parade raises the dead and kicks off the nighttime chills. We gather all the monsters of the night and they march around the park to scope out their targets. When the parade stops, the creatures are set free to run to their territories.

6. Susan Rosen: Mistress of Mesmerism: Our master hypnotist will make you lose your mind. He needs audience volunteers to demonstrate his powerful mind-controlling tricks. If you’re one of the victims, he’ll steal your brain and put you under a spell to perform comical actions just for fun. At the Pictorium.

7. The Witching Hour: You’re on your way out of the park and think you’ve escaped all the monsters. You’re dead wrong. They’re all waiting for you by the exit to give you one last fright before you leave. Lumberjacks, clowns, demons, werewolves, and zombies come together for a final farewell. At Carousel Plaza.

8. Love at First Fright: Our classic show returns with a new cast and new cultural references. Two humans dare to spend a night in the cemetery and are entertained by a creepy crew. Enjoy Halloween songs, spooktacular dance moves, and friendly monsters. At the Grand Music Hall.

9. The Nightmare Rhythm Machine: Move to the beat of our demented drum with a group of zombie percussionists. Nox has recruited his worst minions for a musical dance party. Their thumping beats and freaky dancing will haunt your dreams forever. At County Fair.

Volo Bog State Natural Area

Ingleside, IL 60050
Voice: 815-344-1294
As Winter begins to wane, Volo Bog clings tightly to the cold. Layers of peat act as insulation against the thaw, clinging to winter just a little longer. Dormant winter shrubs and deciduous tamarack conifers await a warming of their roots to begin again their active life. While we may be ready for signs of spring, Volo Bog is still offering signs of winter activity. Deer tracks, rabbit scat & the meandering footprints of raccoons all reveal activity in Volo Bog. Peeking through the snow, carnivorous pitcher plants begin to show signs of greening with the lengthing days. Join a guided tour of this fascinating ecosystem - Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog - a National Natural Landmark! These public bog tours are open to individuals, families and small groups without reservations, however, groups of 10 or more are asked to please phone 815-344-1294 for special arrangements. Imagine a tot-sized replica of a town built especially for kids or a place where they can drive a car to the grocery store, gas up at the local gas station, be a star on stage or a pizza stand owner! Our Neighborhood is a place where children ages 1-6 can practice various roles in a community, challenging themselves to explore, imagine and create, exercising both mind and body. They may even enter the Neighborhood's "backyard" where they can climb, crawl, slide and be busy bodies in a safe environment! We have designed our Children's Neighborhood Museum specifically for children 1-6 years old.
