1.) Vernon Hills 10th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration, PumpkinSaturday, September 27, 3 – 10 p.m. Celebrate Oktoberfest with free family friendly crafts, pumpkin painting, live entertainment, petting zoo, raffles, inflatable activities and so much more!  Enjoy some traditional German brats or classic burgers.  This event is a great idea for families with younger kiddos because there will be something for them to enjoy!  Vernon Hills Metra Station, 75 Route 45, Vernon Hills

Antioch's Fall Wine Walk, Saturday, September 27, 12 - 4:30 p.m.  Stroll the quaint streets of downtown Antioch, stopping at unique boutiques and stores along the way to taste samples from 45 different wines and delicious food at each venue.  Bring a part of the day home with a commemorative wine glass and a complimentary bottle of wine. 3.) Long Grove’s Apple Fest, Friday, September 26 - Sunday, September 28, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  One of the region’s most popular festivals, Apple Fest is a fun-filled weekend of music, pony rides, shopping and a variety of apple-inspired treats, set in the charming streets of Long Grove’s historic village. Walk along the cobble stoned paths from one treat to the next.  This is one of the most visited festivals around and it’s only gotten bigger and better over the years!  Long Grove Historic Village, 307 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove

4.) Six Flags Great America Frightfest, Weekends, Saturday, September 27 - Sunday, November 2.  It's Thrills by Day, Chills by Night at Six Flags Fright Fest. Have a ghoulish good time with hair-raising shows, electrifying street entertainment, thrilling haunted houses and roller coasters in the rides in the dark.  Kids can also enjoy a trick-or-treating trail.  Every year Fright Fest adds on and there’s always something new to experience.  This year, try Goliath in the dark!   Six Flags Great America, I94 and Rt. 132, Gurnee

5.) 40th Annual Arts in the Barn, Saturday, September 27 - Sunday, September 28, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  See original art work from over 170 juried artists and enjoy food, musical entertainment, and children's art activities and a petting zoo will provide a great outing for all ages. Children under 12 are free.  Grounds of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Highway 22, Barrington
