1. Memorial Day Weekend at Six Flags Great America & Hurricane Harbor

Kick off the first long weekend of summer at Six Flags Great America! Don’t forget Hurricane Harbor and the brand new roller coaster, THE JOKER, will also be opening this weekend on May 27. Enjoy a relaxing and thrilling weekend at the Gurnee amusement park.

Saturday, May 27-29; Sat-Sun 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Mon 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Six Flags Great America & Hurricane Harbor, I-94 and Grand Avenue, Gurnee.

2. Essence of Freedom Run

The Essence of Freedom Run is an annual event to raise funds that are needed for the brave men and women, both active duty and Veterans, who defend our country in the armed forces. Choose from a 5K or 10K race and run through the streets of downtown Deerfield. Active duty military officers, police officers and firefighters run free of admission.

Monday, May 29; 7:45-Noon. Admission: $40-$55. Downtown Deerfield, 849 Waukegan Rd., Deerfield.

3. STEM Saturday - AM I on the Radio? WWI Radios

STEM Saturday – Am I on the Radio? World War I Radio is a free admission class at the National Museum of the American Sailor that teaches students how to identify each circuit component on their radio and find out how their placement causes the radio to work. These types of radios were first utilized during World War I. Attendees will assemble their radio and put it into use.

Saturday, May 27; 1-3 p.m. National Museum of the American Sailor, 2531 Sheridan Rd., Great Lakes.

4. Illinois Brass Band at RLCCC

The winner of six North American Band Association Awards, the prestigious Illinois Brass Band graces the stage at Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center. This free admission concert will be on the RLCCC outdoor stage (will move indoors if there is bad weather), so don’t forget a lawn chair or blanket. Of course, you’ll hear some fantastic U.S. traditional tunes in honor of Memorial Day. Also, Tropical Chill Ice Cream Trucks will be in attendance serving their delicious Hawaiian shaved ice and ice cream.

Sunday, May 28; 2 p.m. Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center, 2007 Civic Center Way, Round Lake Beach.

5. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the Citadel Theatre

It’s the final weekend of wild costume parties, voodoo dolls and surprise romance. Who couldn’t be more curious about those three plots combined? Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is now showing at the Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest. This comedy originally written by Christopher Durang revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings. The trio of siblings bicker and discuss their lives while Spike is Masha’s love interest whose claim to fame is landing the role in the sequel to Entourage: Entourage 2. The original Broadway production of the play was nominated for six Tony Awards winning ‘Best Play’ in 2013.

Friday-Sunday, May 26-28; Tickets: $20. Citadel Theatre, 300 S. Waukegan Rd., Lake Forest.
