There is one week left before we send the kids back into school from winter break, and here's what Lake County has for you as the days wind down.
Grayslake Park District Winter Camp Now Thru Wed, Dec 30; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Stop the boredom on the kid's holiday break and sign them up for 1 or all 6 days of winter camp. Each day will have a different theme and games and activities to go with it. Camp will be held Monday - Wednesday both weeks and is available for kids K-4th grade. Bring a sack lunch and water bottle. Visit the website for more details.
Winter Break Camp @ Chicago Botanic Now Thru Wed, Dec 30; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Children can engage in exciting hands-on indoor and outdoor activities while discovering the Garden in winter. They’ll investigate weather, explore seasonal adaptations of plants and animals, enjoy a visit to our Wonderland Express holiday exhibition, and dabble in art. Grades K-5 are invited. Register for 1 day or for all 6 days December 21-23 & 28-30.
Buffet for Wildlife @ Lake County Discovery Museum Wed, Dec 30; 930 - 11 a.m.
Discover how animals find food in the winter. Learn how to provide natural food for wildlife and make a winter wildlife treat to take home. Families with children ages 5 and up are welcome, but must register.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Yards: Sports Photography of Walter Payton Exhibit Thru Dec 31
It's the last weekend of the best running back in the NFL's exhibit. When you’re talking about the best
running backs in NFL history, Chicago Bears late-legendary sprinter Walter Payton’s name always comes up in the conversation. Lake County Discovery Museum is celebrating the gentleman that wore no. 34 in Soldier Field and was an all-star on and off the field in a Picture is Worth a Thousand Yards: Sports Photography of Walter Payton Exhibit. This marks the 30th anniversary since the Bears’ Superbowl Victory in 1985.
Grayslake Giving Trees Exhibition@ Grayslake Heritage Center Now Thru Dec 31
Local non-profit and community organizations have been invited to share their message by decorating a tree at the museum. The public is encouraged to vote for their favorites with their dollars through the end of December.

Elf the Musical @ Marriott Theatre Lincolnshire Now until Sunday January 3
One of the most loved holiday movies is now a full grown Broadway musical. Join Buddy the Elf in his larger than life quest from the North Pole to New York City to find his true identity. This heartwarming and hilarious musical is breaking box office records around the county, and arrives at the Marriott Theatre just in time for the holidays. Wonderland Express @ Chicago Botanic Until January 3
Take a magical trip to a winter wonderland of twinkling lights and holiday beauty at the Chicago Botanic Garden when we kick off the holiday season! Outside, 750,000 lights sparkle and welcome you and your family to the Garden's wonderland. Inside the Regenstein Center, a 10,000-square-foot exhibition of miniature trains winds over bridges, under trestles, past waterfalls, and through more than 80 mini-replicas of Chicago's favorite landmarks. Paul Busse, designer of the Model Railroad Garden, created this amazing exhibition exclusively for the Garden's holiday celebration. Adults tickets are $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers, seniors 62+ are $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers, children 3-12 are $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers and Children 2 and under are free.
Splash into Water @ Fitnation Pool Sun, Jan 3; 5-7 p.m.
Spend the night with the family swimming while school is out. Evening includes games, crafts and light refreshments. Children 8 and under must have parent in pool. Kids 9-12 must be accompanied by a parent. Registration not required ~ $6 per child. Parents & children under the age of 3 are free.
Beatrice Potter Exhibit @ Chicago Botanic Until February 7
Beatrix Potter, beloved children’s author and naturalist's exhibit will be available for viewing at the Lenhardt Library in the Regenstein Center from November 13 through February 7.
Snowmobile Exhibit @ Volo Auto Museum Until April 30
Some of the finest remaining examples of the first ever snowmobiles dating back 92 years will be on display at the Volo Auto Museum. These will be on display through April. Snowmobiles from the 1920's through the 1980's can be seen.
